Chapter 4 - A Mother’s Receipts

By 6:15 PM, the sound of slamming doors and heavy footsteps echoed from downstairs.

I walked out of my bedroom and stood at the top of the staircase, looking down into the foyer. Evelyn and Melissa were dragging two large designer suitcases toward the front door, their faces flushed with righteous anger.

“Are you happy now?” Evelyn snapped, looking up at me with pure venom in her eyes. “We’re leaving! We’re packing our things and walking out of this ungrateful house! But don't you dare call us when you realize you can't manage your own life without our help!”

Melissa hoisted her handbag over her shoulder. “You’re throwing away your own family for a brat who throws tantrums over sugar! You’ll regret this, Natalie. When Mom changes her will and cuts you out of the family estate, don't come crying to us.”

I walked slowly down the stairs, each step deliberate and heavy. I didn't say a word until I reached the bottom landing, standing directly between them and the front door.

“Estate?” I asked quietly. “What estate, Melissa? Mom’s two-bedroom condo in Boca that’s currently mortgaged up to the rafters? Or the rusted-out Buick she drives?”

Evelyn gasped, stepping forward as if she wanted to slap me. “How dare you speak to your mother that way! After everything your father left us—!”

“My father left everything to me in a protected trust, Mom, and you know it,” I interrupted, my voice cutting through her tirade like a scalpel. “Just like you know that you haven't contributed a single dime to my household since you moved in three months ago under the guise of ‘helping out.’”

I reached into the pocket of my cardigan, pulled out a small black flash drive, and held it out between my fingers.

“What is that?” Melissa asked suspiciously, her eyes narrowing.

“That is seventy-two hours of uninterrupted 4K video and audio footage from every single smart camera installed in my home,” I said smoothly. “It features crystal-clear recordings of you and Mom screaming at a five-year-old child, ripping her belongings away, locking her in her bedroom against her will, and deliberately terrorizing her by telling her the police were going to come take her away to a detention center.”

The color drained from Melissa’s face in an instant. Her mouth opened, but no words came out.

Evelyn’s haughty posture collapsed. She gripped the handle of her suitcase so hard her knuckles turned chalk-white. “You… you’ve been spying on us?”

“It’s my house,” I reminded her coldly. “And those cameras are legally registered under my security account. Do you know what child protective services and the state prosecutor do when they see a recorded pattern of psychological abuse against a minor, executed by family members entrusted with her care?”

Melissa took a half-step backward, her voice trembling. “You… you wouldn’t. We’re family!”

“You ceased being family the moment you weaponized the police against my daughter,” I said, stepping closer to them. “Now, here is how this is going to go. You are going to walk out that front door right now. You are going to get into your car and drive away. You will never, ever set foot on my property again. You will not call, you will not text, and you will not attempt to contact Lily for the rest of your natural lives.”

“You can’t do that!” Evelyn shrieked, panic finally breaking through her cold exterior. “I’m her grandmother! I have rights! I’ll sue you for grandparent visitation!”

“File the paperwork,” I invited with a calm, chilling smile. “Attach this flash drive as exhibit A to your petition. See how fast a family court judge grants you visitation after watching you scream at a five-year-old child until she vomits from fear.”

I tossed the flash drive onto the console table by the door, let it click softly against the wood, and pointed toward the open exit.

“Get out.”
