Chapter 8 - Screams in the Hallway

For three seconds, absolute silence hung in the conference room.

Evelyn stared at me across the mahogany table, her chest heaving as she realized that her manipulation, her gaslighting, and her lifelong habit of ruling over her daughters with fear and intimidation had finally hit an immovable wall.

Then, the mask completely slipped.

“You ungrateful, selfish little bitch!” Evelyn screamed, lunging across the table with her hands clawed, as if she intended to lunge right at my throat.

Before she could take two steps, the side door of the conference room clicked open.

Two county sheriff’s deputies stepped smoothly into the room, intercepting my mother before she could even reach the edge of the table. One deputy gripped Evelyn firmly by the upper arms, gently but irresistibly forcing her back into a chair, while the second deputy rested his hand casually on his utility belt.

“Ma’am, keep your hands to yourself and remain seated,” the deputy instructed in a low, authoritative voice.

Evelyn thrashed against his grip, her face purple with rage, screaming obscenities that I had never heard come out of my mother’s mouth in my entire life. “Let go of me, you fascist pig! My daughter is framing us! She’s a monster! She stole our lives!”

Melissa burst into violent, uncontrolled tears, burying her face in her hands as her designer tote bag spilled its contents all over the carpet. “Mom, stop it! Just stop it! We’re ruined! Don't you see she won? She won!”

I sat completely still, watching the woman who had spent decades trying to control every aspect of my existence completely unravel under the weight of her own actions.

Marcus Vance slid a thick manila folder across the table toward the deputies.

“Active bench warrants for failure to appear on the municipal harassment citations, coupled with the district attorney’s expedited filing for false police reporting,” Marcus stated professionally. “Take them into custody for booking, officers.”

As the deputies hauled Evelyn to her feet—her voice echoing down the marble hallway in a shrill, hysterical tirade of curses and shrieks—I felt a profound, incredible lightness settle into my chest.

The nightmare was over. The monsters under the bed had finally been locked away where they couldn't hurt anyone ever again.
