Chapter 5 - The Web Unravels

Two days passed in a quiet, fragile recovery.

Lily still woke up startled during the night, checking to make sure I was still sitting in the armchair beside her bed, but the heavy, suffocating shadow that had hung over the house began to lift. We baked real chocolate cupcakes with rainbow sprinkles, laughed while decorating them, and ate them right at the kitchen island without a single rule or reprimand in sight.

Yet, I knew my mother and sister wouldn't go quietly into the night. People like Evelyn and Melissa didn't admit defeat—they retaliated when cornered.

On Sunday morning, my suspicions were confirmed.

My phone buzzed on the kitchen counter while I was pouring orange juice. I glanced at the screen: an incoming call from an unfamiliar local number.

I swiped to answer.

“Mrs. Harper?” a crisp, professional female voice asked.

“Speaking.”

“My name is Investigator Sarah Jenkins with the county Department of Family and Children’s Services. We received an anonymous referral regarding your household late Friday evening, alleging severe child neglect, unsafe living conditions, and emotional abuse.”

A cold smirk touched the corner of my lips. They hadn't wasted any time.

“Let me guess, Investigator Jenkins,” I said smoothly. “The caller claimed an out-of-control child, an absentee mother, and requested an immediate welfare check?”

There was a brief pause on the other end of the line. “The report was detailed, Mrs. Harper. Protocol requires us to conduct an in-person assessment within forty-eight hours. Are you available for a home visit this afternoon?”

“I am more than available,” I replied immediately. “In fact, I insist upon it. And while you’re here, Investigator Jenkins, I have a few digital files of my own I’d like to upload directly to your case portal—including unedited smart-home surveillance footage, medical documentation, and the official police report from Thursday afternoon where my mother and sister filed a false emergency dispatch against my five-year-old daughter.”

Another pause, much longer this time.

“Oh,” Investigator Jenkins said, her professional tone shifting instantly. “It appears… there may be additional context to this referral. What time works best for you today?”

“Come by at two o'clock,” I said. “I’ll have coffee, fresh cupcakes, and all the receipts waiting for you.”
