Chapter 2 - The Microphone at the Altar

Serena didn’t cry. She didn’t slap Giselle back. She didn’t scream at Justin.

Instead, she did something far more dangerous: she stood completely still, her eyes turning into shards of polished black ice.

She lifted five-year-old Toby into her arms, wiping a smudge of pink frosting from his trembling chin. The red print of Giselle’s hand was already swelling against his delicate skin.

“Mommy’s got you,” Serena whispered into Toby’s hair, her voice shockingly steady. “You did nothing wrong, baby. Not a single thing.”

“Serena, lower your voice,” Justin hissed, grabbing her elbow again with enough force to bruise. “The Vance family is watching. Harrison Vance is standing right by the arch! Do you have any idea how much money Zachary’s father controls? If you embarrass us now, my mother will never forgive you.”

“Your mother?” Serena repeated softly, turning her head to look at him. She looked at his crisp designer tuxedo—the one she had picked out—and the golden cuff links he wore so proudly. “You’re worried about your mother’s forgiveness?”

“Look at the scene you’re making!” Giselle chimed in, adjusting her pearl necklace with trembling, frantic fingers. She spoke loud enough for the surrounding guests to hear, desperate to control the narrative. “The girl has no class! I catch her son stealing expensive catering off the head table, and she treats me like a criminal! This is what happens when you marry beneath your station!”

Whispers exploded through the crowd like dry brush catching fire.

“Did you hear that?”

“Giselle said they’re poor...”

“I always wondered why Justin’s wife looked so plain...”

“To steal a cupcake at a six-hundred-thousand-dollar wedding? How trashy.”

Felicia, the bride, came bustling out of the bridal suite in her twenty-thousand-dollar silk gown, her heavy veil trailing behind her. Her face was flushed with fury.

“What is going on out here?!” Felicia shrieked, glaring at Serena. “Serena, why is your kid crying?! Zachary and his father are about to walk down the aisle! You’re ruining my entrance!”

“Your nephew was slapped by your mother,” Serena said, her tone as smooth as glass.

“He took food meant for the VIP table!” Felicia snapped. “It’s a cupcake, Serena! Get over it! Justin, control your wife!”

Justin squeezed Serena’s arm harder. “Let’s go to the side room. Now, Serena.”

Serena looked down at Toby, who was hiding his face in her neck, sniffling quietly. Then she looked at the centerpiece of the ballroom: a custom brass microphone attached to the main sound system, set up next to the string quartet for the father-of-the-bride toast.

Nora, the young waitress who had given Toby the cupcake, stepped forward courageously, her face pale. “Excuse me... ma’am, I gave the little boy the cupcake. It was from the preparation tray—”

“Shut up and go back to the kitchen!” Giselle barked at the waitress. “You’re fired!”

Serena held up one finger. “No one is fired.”

She walked straight past Justin. He reached out to grab her shoulder, but Serena swung around with a glare so terrifyingly cold that Justin froze in his tracks.

She didn’t walk toward the side exit. She walked directly onto the raised floral platform where the string quartet was playing, stood in front of the brass microphone, and tapped the metal grid twice.

A sharp, booming chime echoed through the entire six-hundred-thousand-dollar venue.

All three hundred guests—including corporate titans, city council members, and the entire Vance real estate dynasty—turned their heads in unison.
