Chapter 6 - The Viral Trap

Cornered animals always snap back, but foolish ones snap blindly.

By the next morning, Giselle and Felicia decided to launch a desperate counter-offensive. They went on a local news channel’s trashy afternoon talk show, sitting side by side on a leather couch, looking tearful and pathetic.

Giselle wore a conservative black dress, holding a handkerchief to her eyes.

“We were brutally humiliated,” Giselle sobbed to the talk show host, her voice trembling with practiced theatrical drama. “Serena comes from money, yes, but she has a heart of stone! My daughter’s dream wedding was ruined over a simple misunderstanding! She made up a lie about me hitting her son just to ruin our family!”

Felicia sniffled into the camera. “I spent two years planning my wedding to Zachary. Serena was jealous because my life was perfect! She canceled the payment at the altar out of pure malice! She’s a monster who uses her money to destroy poor people!”

The interview went viral instantly. Hashtags like #CruelHeiress and #JusticeForFelicia began trending on Twitter and TikTok. Thousands of internet users, ignorant of the facts, began posting angry comments on Vanguard Logistics’ public pages.

Inside her office, Serena watched the broadcast on a high-definition monitor.

Arthur Sterling stood beside her, shaking his head. “They’re digging their own graves, Serena. Should I release the press statement?”

“No,” Serena said smoothly, a cold smile touching her lips. “A press statement is just words. People don’t believe words. They believe what they see with their own eyes.”

Serena opened her laptop and accessed the high-security cloud server for the Pine Valley Country Club.

As the sole primary funder of the event, Serena had secured exclusive ownership rights to all security camera footage recorded on the premises that morning.

“Upload the unedited 4K audio-video feed from Camera 4,” Serena ordered her media team. “The one mounted directly above the dessert table.”

Ten minutes later, Serena’s private account dropped a single video onto every major social media platform, captioned with just six words:

“The truth doesn’t need a publicist.”

The video was crystal clear.

It showed five-year-old Toby sitting quietly near the table. It showed Nora the waitress kindly handing him the cupcake. It showed Toby politely saying, “Thank you, lady.”

And then, it showed Giselle marching up from behind, her face twisted in rage, pulling her arm back and violently striking the five-year-old child so hard he flew backward onto the marble floor.

The high-definition audio picked up everything: The sound of the slap echoing like a whip. Toby’s tiny, terrified gasp. And Giselle’s vicious screech: “Poor children need to learn not to touch what doesn’t belong to them!”

The video didn’t end there. It continued, showing Justin grabbing Serena’s arm, leaning down, and whispering his spineless betrayal: “Don’t ruin my sister’s big day. Let it go.”
