Chapter 3 - The Safehouse Net

By 5:30 a.m., an armored civilian transport sent by my brother Arthur pulled into the rear alley behind my property.
While Victor Hale sat zip-tied inside my basement under the watchful eyes of two retired Recon Marines from my old unit, I carried Maya into the back of the transport. A specialized mobile medical team—vetted personally by Arthur—was already waiting inside with ultrasound equipment, IV fluids, and pain relief.
The senior physician, Dr. Sarah Lin, conducted a thorough examination while the vehicle navigated the quiet backroads toward an undisclosed safehouse in northern Virginia.
I sat beside Maya, holding her hand, my heart pounding in my chest until Dr. Lin turned the ultrasound screen toward us.
A tiny, rhythmic flickering light appeared on the monitor.
"The fetal heartbeat is strong, Colonel," Dr. Lin said softly, her face filled with quiet relief. "Your daughter has severe soft-tissue trauma, two bruised ribs, and minor lacerations, but the baby is unharmed. It's a miracle."
Maya wept silently, her shoulders shaking as she stared at the screen. "Mom... my baby is okay?"
"Your baby is safe," I whispered, kissing her forehead. "And no one will ever touch either of you again."
While Maya rested, I opened my encrypted satellite laptop. Arthur’s voice echoed through my secure earpiece.
"Evelyn, I just filed an emergency protective petition and an asset-freeze notice under seal with the Federal District Court," Arthur reported. "We have the forensic medical reports, the audio recording from Victor Hale’s phone, and the financial trail showing Celeste paid Hale two hundred thousand dollars at 2:00 a.m. to 'clean up a domestic issue.'"
"What about Marcus Vanguard?" I asked, my tone turning dangerously sharp.

"Marcus is currently at his family's penthouse in Manhattan," Arthur replied. "According to our wiretaps, he tried to call Maya six times this morning, but Celeste took his phone. The Vanguards are already trying to draft a non-disclosure agreement to throw at us before sunrise."
"Let them try," I said softly. "They think this is a divorce. I’m going to make sure it’s an execution."
