Chapter 7 - The Gala of Shadows

That evening, the Vanguard family attempted one last desperate demonstration of power.

Despite the crushing financial blow and the news media surrounding their corporate headquarters, William Vanguard refused to cancel the annual Vanguard Children's Foundation Gala at the Plaza Hotel—a high-society event attended by senators, governors, and Wall Street titans.

They believed that by appearing in public surrounded by the city's elite, they could project stability and signal to the Department of Justice that they were too powerful to fail.

At 8:30 p.m., the grand ballroom of the Plaza was packed with photographers, high-society figures, and political donors. Celeste Vanguard stood near the main stage wearing a sixty-thousand-dollar emerald gown, holding a glass of champagne, smiling for the cameras while three bodyguards stood nervously near the perimeter.

"Look relaxed, Celeste," William whispered beside her, his teeth gritted behind a fake smile. "The prosecutor’s office won't make a move in a room full of federal judges and news anchors."

Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the back of the ballroom clicked open.

The laughter and chatter in the room ground to an abrupt halt.

Walking down the center aisle, flanked by four uniformed U.S. Army Military Police officers and two Federal Special Agents, was me.

I did not wear civilian clothes. I wore my dark blue Army Service Uniform, immaculate and pressed, adorned with thirty years of military commendations, including the Distinguished Service Medal and the Defense Superior Service Medal.

Beside me walked my brother Arthur, holding a black leather briefcase.

The photographers turned their cameras away from the stage, flashes exploding in a blinding storm as I marched toward the head table with absolute, unyielding military authority.

Celeste’s face drained of every ounce of color. She dropped her champagne flute; the crystal shattered across the polished dance floor.

"What is the meaning of this?!" William Vanguard shouted, stepping in front of his daughter. "This is a private charity event! Security, remove these people!"

The Plaza security guards took one step forward, saw the federal badges displayed by the agents at my side, and immediately backed away.

I stopped three feet from Celeste.

"Celeste Vanguard," my voice echoed clearly through the silent, massive ballroom. "You are under arrest by order of the Federal District Court of New York."
