Chapter 4 - The Vanguard Machine

At 9:00 a.m., the Vanguard empire attempted to launch its counter-offensive.

From their marble-clad corporate headquarters in midtown Manhattan, the Vanguard Group’s public relations team released a subtle, carefully worded statement to elite financial tabloids. They hinted that Maya Hartwell had suffered a 'nervous breakdown' and fled the Vanguard estate after attempting to extract an unauthorized financial settlement from her husband, Marcus.

Celeste Vanguard sat in her father’s corner office on the 50th floor, sipping black tea, staring out at the Manhattan skyline. Beside her stood Marcus, looking pale, disheveled, and visibly nervous.

"Stop pacing, Marcus," Celeste snapped, adjusting her diamond necklace. "She’s a nobody from a military town. Her mother lives on an army pension. What can they possibly do? File a police report in some backwoods county?"

"Celeste, you kicked her down the stairs!" Marcus stammered, his hands shaking as he poured a glass of scotch. "She was bleeding! If she goes to the press—"

"The press belongs to us!" Celeste barked, slamming her teacup down onto the saucer. "Father owns three major media networks and sits on the board of the firm that funds the district attorney’s election campaign. The police won't touch this. By tomorrow, Maya will be labeled an unstable fortune-hunter, and you will file for an annulment on grounds of emotional cruelty."

The office door swung open, and William Vanguard—the family patriarch and founder of Vanguard Global Logistics—stepped into the room. His face was thunderous.

"Father," Celeste smiled smoothly. "Everything is under control. Victor Hale handled the—"

"Victor Hale was arrested an hour ago by federal marshals in Maryland," William interrupted, his voice dropping like an anvil onto the room.

Celeste’s smile evaporated. "What?"

"And that’s not all," William said, his knuckles white as he threw a stack of official court summonses onto the mahogany desk. "Every offshore account attached to our logistics division was frozen thirty minutes ago by the Department of Justice. Our shares just dropped twelve percent in pre-market trading."

Marcus dropped his glass, the liquid shattering across the Persian rug. "Father... who did this?"

William looked at his daughter with pure, terrifying fury. "Who was Maya’s mother, Celeste? You told me she was a retired secretary!"

May you like

"She is!" Celeste shouted, rising from her chair.

"She was the Commander of the Army Cyber Intelligence Directorate!" William roared. "And she just declared war on this family!"
