Chapter 3 - Christmas Morning Realization

The morning sun broke over the horizon, painting the snow-covered rooftops in dazzling shades of gold and amber.
Inside our cozy home, the air was filled with the rich, comforting scent of cinnamon rolls baking in the oven and freshly brewed coffee. Lily came bounding down the stairs in her pajamas, her face lit up with excitement as she saw the presents beneath our tree. For a few magical hours, the betrayal of the previous night faded away as we unwrapped gifts, laughed over burnt toast, and built an elaborate gingerbread house on the kitchen table.
Miles away, in the luxurious guest suite of the Providence mansion, Nathan Reed was waking up to a very different kind of morning.
According to the digital timeline of our smart-home logs and corporate messaging apps, Nathan woke up around 8:30 AM, nursing a mild hangover from the previous night’s festivities. He stepped out of bed, slipped into his designer bathrobe, and walked downstairs to the expansive marble kitchen where his parents and Brooke were enjoying a leisurely breakfast of mimosas and pastries.
“Morning, son,” Arthur Reed greeted cheerfully, raising his glass. “Hell of a party last night. Brooke was a hit with the regional directors.”
Nathan smiled, leaning over to kiss the top of Brooke’s head. “Thanks, babe. Everything went smoother than planned.”
He pulled out his corporate smartphone to check his morning emails and review the restaurant’s holiday weekend revenue reports. He tapped the banking app icon, expecting to see the healthy balances of our operating accounts.
Instead, a stark red notification popped up across the screen:
ACCESS DENIED: Account frozen pending corporate compliance audit and court-ordered freeze.
Nathan frowned, tapping the screen again. He tried logging into his personal checking account—the one tied to his primary debit card.
Transaction Declined. Please contact your financial institution.
A knot of unease tightened in his stomach. He opened his browser, attempting to log into the corporate payroll portal to check executive disbursements.
Account status: Suspended under emergency legal injunction.
“What the hell...?” Nathan muttered under his breath, his face turning pale.
Brooke looked up from her plate, noticing the sudden tension in his posture. “Is something wrong, Nathan? Did the restaurant tax deposit clear?”
“I... I don't know,” Nathan stammered, tapping frantically against his screen. “My accounts are locked. All of them. The bank must have flagged a holiday security glitch.”
Just then, the front doorbell chimed loudly throughout the cavernous foyer.
Arthur Reed frowned, wiping his mouth with a linen napkin. “Are we expecting visitors on Christmas morning?”
Before anyone could answer, the heavy front door opened—unlocked, because Nathan had forgotten to set the security deadbolt the night before—and a local process server, accompanied by two county sheriff’s deputies, stepped directly into the marble foyer.
“Nathaniel Reed?” the process server called out, holding a thick manila folder.
Nathan walked out of the kitchen, his heart hammering against his ribs. “I’m Nathan Reed. Who are you? What is the meaning of this?”

The server stepped forward, handing the heavy packet directly into Nathan’s trembling hands.
“You’ve been served with emergency divorce proceedings, corporate asset freeze injunctions, and a formal notice of immediate lease termination and property reclamation for this estate,” the server announced loudly, ensuring everyone in the kitchen could hear every word. “Have a merry Christmas, Mr. Reed.”
