Chapter 6 - Brooke’s True Colors

In the sleek, modern lobby of a downtown Providence coffee shop, Brooke Lawson sat at a corner table, tapping her manicured fingernails impatiently against her marble-topped surface.
She had expected Nathan to call her with good news by mid-morning. She had expected him to storm into the corporate offices, put his foot down, and force me to back down through sheer executive dominance.
Instead, her phone buzzed with a notification from her banking app.
Transaction Declined.
Brooke frowned, pulling up her balance dashboard. Her primary checking account—funded largely by the "consulting fees" Nathan had secretly funneled to her through dummy vendor invoices over the past eight months—showed a balance of zero dollars.
Every single cent had been frozen under the federal and state financial clawback injunctions filed by Sarah Mitchell’s firm as part of the corporate fraud investigation.
Panic flared in Brooke’s chest. She grabbed her designer leather handbag, stood up, and dialed Nathan’s cell phone with trembling fingers.
The phone went straight to voicemail.
She dialed again. Voicemail.
Just then, two men in dark suits walked into the coffee shop, scanning the room before locking their eyes directly onto Brooke. They didn't look like police officers; they looked like corporate investigators.
One of them approached her table, flashing a laminated identification badge.
“Ms. Brooke Lawson?”
Brooke’s breath caught in her throat. She tried to maintain an air of haughty indifference, tossing her blonde hair over her shoulder. “Yes? Can I help you?”
“You are being served with a civil subpoena and a formal demand for asset restitution on behalf of Reed Culinary Enterprises,” the investigator said, placing a thick envelope onto the table. “Our forensic audit has tracked over two hundred and fifty thousand dollars in corporate funds illegally transferred to your personal accounts under fraudulent consulting pretenses. You have seventy-two hours to surrender all items purchased with those funds—including your vehicle, your jewelry, and your designer wardrobe—or face immediate criminal indictment for grand larceny and wire fraud.”
Brooke stared at the envelope as if it were a venomous snake.
“This is insane!” she shrieked, drawing the attention of everyone in the coffee shop. “Nathan told me the money was his! He said his wife was just a doormat who didn't know anything about business!”
“Mr. Reed was mistaken,” the investigator replied calmly. “And as for Mr. Reed, he’s currently facing his own set of felony investigations for corporate embezzlement. I suggest you consult a very good defense attorney, Ms. Lawson. You’re going to need one.”
The investigators turned and walked out of the coffee shop, leaving Brooke sitting alone at the marble table.
The designer coat, the gold-wrapped gifts, the glamorous lifestyle she had stolen by latching onto a married man who promised her an easy climb to the top—it had all evaporated into thin air in the span of a single morning.

She pulled out her phone to call Nathan one last time, only to discover that her number had been blocked.
She was completely, utterly alone.
