Chapter 7 - The Final Hearing

The Rhode Island Family and Superior Court building stood tall against the crisp winter sky, its heavy limestone pillars casting long shadows across the plaza.

It was late February. Two months had passed since that bitter Christmas Eve when Nathan had tried to erase Lily and me from his perfect world.

Inside Courtroom 2A, the atmosphere was solemn, heavy with the quiet finality of a war that had already been fought and won.

Nathan Reed sat at the defense table alone. No high-priced legal team flanked him anymore; his previous attorneys had dropped him the moment they realized his assets were seized and he couldn't pay their retainers. He looked older, gaunt, and defeated, his expensive tailored suits now hanging loosely from his frame.

I sat at the plaintiff’s table beside Sarah Mitchell, wearing a classic navy-blue dress. Behind us in the gallery sat my father, smiling softly, and next to him, Lily was busy coloring a picture of a golden retriever in her new sketchpad, completely shielded from the legal wrangling around her.

Judge Arthur Henderson—a formidable jurist with silver hair and a reputation for absolute fairness—adjusted his spectacles as he reviewed the final settlement documents.

“This court has reviewed the uncontested divorce terms, the corporate forensic audits, the real estate trust deeds, and the custody agreements,” Judge Henderson announced, his deep, resonant voice echoing through the silent chamber.

He looked up from the papers, locking his gaze directly onto Nathan.

“Mr. Reed, your attempts to conceal corporate assets, engage in illicit financial diversions, and commit marital abandonment have been thoroughly documented and legally dismantled. Do you have any final statements to make before I sign these decrees?”

Nathan swallowed hard, his hands trembling as he gripped the edge of the mahogany table. He looked across the room toward me, his eyes filled with a pathetic, desperate plea for mercy that came six years too late.

“Hannah... please,” Nathan whispered, his voice cracking. “We have a history. We built that business together... think of Lily. Don't leave me with nothing.”

I didn't blink. I didn't lean forward. I simply looked back at him with the quiet, unshakable strength of a woman who had finally reclaimed her life.

“You left your daughter in the cold on Christmas Eve, Nathan,” I said clearly, loud enough for the microphone to catch every syllable. “I didn't take everything from you. I simply stopped letting you take everything from us.”

Judge Henderson nodded slowly, picking up his heavy fountain pen.

“The court finds in full favor of the petitioner,” the judge declared.

He brought his gavel down with a single, resounding crack.

Bang.

“Full, sole legal and physical custody of the minor child is granted to Hannah Reed. Permanent restraining orders are enacted. All corporate shares, real estate holdings, and restaurant assets are officially assigned to the Hannah Reed Living Trust. Furthermore, Mr. Reed is remanded to county custody pending trial on federal wire fraud and embezzlement charges. Court is adjourned.”

As the bailiffs stepped forward to place handcuffs on Nathan and lead him away through the side doors of the courtroom, the final chapter of the nightmare closed forever.
