Chapter 3 - The Monday Morning Silence

The silence at the headquarters of Apex Property Solutions was not the peaceful kind; it was the suffocating, heavy stillness of a tomb. It was 8:00 AM on the first Monday after the holiday break.

Frank pulled his luxury sedan into the executive spot—the one clearly marked "CEO" that he had usurped three years ago—and marched toward the glass doors with his son, Mark, in tow. They were complaining loudly about the service at their recent vacation spot, their voices echoing in the lobby.

They reached for the door handles, but they didn't budge.

"What in the hell?" Frank pounded on the glass. "Hey! Open up!"

Inside, the lobby was occupied only by two stone-faced security guards and a new receptionist, a woman they had never seen before. She didn't look up from her screen as Frank continued to bang on the glass.

Eventually, the side door buzzed open, and the lead security officer stepped out, holding a thick stack of manila envelopes. He didn't look like he was there to welcome them back.

"Mr. Frank, Mr. Mark," the guard said, his voice clipped. "You are no longer authorized to enter these premises. Effective immediately, your access cards have been deactivated."

"Authorized?" Frank let out a scoffing laugh, though his eyes darted around, suddenly uneasy as other relatives began to trickle into the parking lot, all meeting the same locked doors. "I think you’re confused. I’m the Director of Operations. My daughter is married to the owner. This is some kind of sick joke."

The guard handed them each an envelope. "It’s not a joke, sir. It’s a termination notice. Please vacate the property immediately. The police have been notified to assist with the removal of any non-employees."

Around them, the chaos began. Cousins, aunts, and brothers were swarming the entrance, confusion turning into frantic, high-pitched outrage. The "handyman’s" family—the people who had spent years mocking him—were suddenly staring into the abyss of unemployment.

"Where is he?" Frank roared, his face turning a dangerous shade of purple. "Where is Nicholas? I want him out here right now!"

"Mr. Nicholas is not on the premises," the guard replied calmly. "And he is no longer taking your calls."
