Chapter 8 - The Desperate Plea
The final blow came when the bank foreclosed on the estate. The mansion, the symbol of their hollow success, was now property of the creditors.
Isabella, now living in a small, cramped apartment across town, felt the full weight of her choices. She had lost her marriage, her status, and her family’s respect. She was facing potential criminal charges as a co-signatory on the fraudulent accounts.
She took a taxi to Nicholas’s corporate office. She looked disheveled—the designer clothes were gone, replaced by something much more modest. She stood at the reception desk, begging to see him.
"Just five minutes," she pleaded. "Please. I didn't know the extent of what they were doing. I thought… I thought we were just taking what was owed."
When she was finally led into his office, she expected to see the man she had mocked—the "handyman" she had treated like a servant. But Nicholas didn't look like a servant. He sat behind a desk of solid mahogany, his face impassive.
"I loved you, Nick," she whispered, her eyes welling with tears. "We can fix this. We can move past this."
Nicholas didn't move. He gestured to a file folder on his desk.
"Isabella," he said, his voice calm and cold. "You didn't love me. You loved the secret. You loved having someone you could control and hide away while you enjoyed the fruits of my labor. I have the emails. I have the transcripts where you laughed about how 'lucky' you were that I was too 'simple' to figure out your father’s schemes."
Isabella gasped, her face flushing crimson.

"The court will decide your fate," he said, rising from his chair. "I am not your husband anymore. I am not your benefactor. And as of this moment, I am certainly not your friend."
He turned his back on her, walking toward the window. The interview was over. As she was escorted out by security, she finally understood: the handyman she had mocked was a man of steel, and she had spent her entire marriage trying to set fire to a furnace.
