Chapter 5 - The Public Mask Falls

The Charity Gala was the most important night of the social season. For years, the family had treated it as their personal runway, using company funds to buy the best tables and the most expensive clothes.
This year, however, the mood was different.
Frank and Isabella pulled up in a hired taxi, their luxury cars having been repossessed just hours before. The humiliation was palpable. They walked through the lobby, hoping to avoid the whispers, but they were everywhere. The elite of the city, who had once kissed up to them, now looked through them as if they were ghosts.
"Is that Frank?" someone whispered loudly. "I heard he’s under investigation for fraud."
"I heard the 'handyman' son-in-law was the real owner all along," another voice added, dripping with malice.
Isabella felt the walls closing in. She saw the head of a competing property firm—a man who had once been desperate to work with Apex—standing near the bar. She tried to approach him, but he turned his back, signaling to his security that he wasn't interested.
Then, the room went dead silent.
The doors opened, and Nicholas walked in. But this wasn't the man in the dirty, oil-stained jeans. He wore a charcoal, three-piece tailored suit that commanded the room. He looked powerful, composed, and dangerous.
By his side, looking radiant and confident, was Mackenzie. She was dressed elegantly, her head held high, looking nothing like the shivering, discarded girl on the porch.
They walked with the grace of people who owned the very air they breathed. They didn't even look at the family. They walked straight to the center of the room, where the event organizers greeted them like royalty.
"Nicholas!" the organizer beamed. "We were honored by your generous donation to the Foundation. It's a game-changer for the kids."
Frank stood frozen, his drink forgotten in his hand. The "toolbox son-in-law" was the guest of honor, the man of the hour, the titan of industry. And he had just humiliated them without even saying a word.

Isabella looked at Nicholas, meeting his eyes across the room. She expected to see anger. She expected to see the man she thought she knew. Instead, she saw nothing. No love, no hate, no recognition. Just a cool, detached indifference.
She realized then that he hadn't just left the marriage. He had left them behind entirely. The handyman had walked out of his old life, and he wasn't looking back.
