Chapter 9 - The Trial
The trial of Apex Property Solutions vs. Frank Miller et al. became the scandal of the year. The courtroom was packed daily with journalists and industry analysts eager to witness the fall of a family that had once been the toast of the town.
When the time came for Nicholas to take the stand, the room went unnervingly quiet. He didn't speak with the bravado of an angry man; he spoke with the precision of an engineer. He detailed exactly how the embezzlement had been executed, showing the jury the "ghost employees" Frank had put on the payroll, the inflated invoices for supplies that never arrived, and the deliberate exclusion of crucial safety upgrades in favor of lining their own pockets.
The prosecution turned their attention to the family’s defense. Frank’s lawyers desperately tried to paint Nicholas as a "manipulative villain" who had set a trap. But when Nicholas was asked why he had waited so long to act, his answer left the courtroom stunned.
"I didn't wait to trap them," Nicholas said, looking directly at the jury. "I waited because I believed that family was built on love, not greed. I wanted to give my wife’s family the benefit of the doubt, even when the evidence of their rot became impossible to ignore. I didn't hide my wealth to be cruel; I hid it to see if they could value me as a man, not just a paycheck."

When the jury returned after only four hours of deliberation, the verdict was unanimous. Frank and his two sons were found guilty on all counts of fraud, embezzlement, and racketeering. Isabella, while not facing jail time due to a plea deal that required her to forfeit all remaining assets, was permanently barred from any executive position in the property management industry.
As the judge read the sentencing, Frank finally looked at Nicholas. There was no defiance left in his eyes, only a hollow, terrifying realization that he had sacrificed everything for the sake of his own pride. Nicholas didn't gloat; he simply gathered his notes, stood up, and walked out of the courtroom, leaving the past behind him forever.
