Chapter 2 - The Laptop of Lies

The quiet in the living room was deafening after the front door slammed shut.
Wyatt stood near the kitchen counter, his face pale, his hands trembling as he held a paper towel against his reddened cheek. Broken porcelain, spilled charro beans, and marinated chicken covered the hardwood floor.
“Wyatt,” I said softly, stepping over the mess and taking his trembling hands into mine. “Look at me.”
He raised his eyes, filled with shame and confusion. “Naomi… I’m so sorry. I ruined your dinner. I ruined your marriage.”
“You didn’t ruin anything, sweetie,” I said, my voice steady and warm. “You just opened my eyes to something I should have ended years ago. That slap was the best thing that could have happened to me, because it woke me up.”
I guided him to the sofa, made him sit down, and handed him an ice pack from the freezer. Then, my eyes fell on Javier’s leather briefcase sitting on the accent chair by the window. His laptop screen was still open, humming softly in the dim light of the living room.
The pop-up notification flashed across the screen again:
Vanessa (Real Estate): My love, did she sign the mortgage yet? The seller for the Scottsdale property is demanding the $150,000 wire transfer by tomorrow morning or the deal is off.
My blood ran cold.
I sat down in front of the laptop, my fingers hovering over the keyboard. Javier had always been notoriously sloppy with his security, using his birthdate for almost every password. I typed it in, and the screen unlocked instantly.
What I found over the next forty-five minutes made the blood roar in my ears.
Javier hadn’t just been lying about his “client meetings.” He had been running a second, secret life for over a year.
Vanessa wasn’t just his real estate agent; she was his mistress—a twenty-six-year-old high-end realtor who specialized in luxury flips in Scottsdale. Javier had been renting a luxury high-rise apartment for her, funded entirely by a business credit card he had secretly opened under the tax ID of my cosmetics company, Luminary Beauty.
I clicked onto his banking tab. Open on the browser was an unverified wire transfer request from my corporate reserve account to an LLC named V&J Capital Holdings.
The amount: $150,000.
The transaction status read: PENDING SECONDARY AUTHORIZATION.
Javier had forged my digital signature on an application to extend my business line of credit, and he had been planning to trick me into tapping the "confirm" link sent to my email under the guise of an annual tax filing document. He had even downloaded an e-signature app on my tablet without my knowledge.
If I hadn’t flipped that table tonight, if Wyatt hadn’t come to visit, I would have signed those papers tomorrow morning, handing my husband and his mistress $150,000 to buy a luxury villa while my eighteen-year-old brother was slapped for eating a drumstick.
“Naomi?” Wyatt whispered from the sofa, holding the ice pack to his face. “What is it?”
I turned the screen toward him. My hands weren't shaking anymore. A cold, surgical calm had taken over my body.
“This is Javier’s ticket to federal prison, Wyatt,” I said quietly.
I pulled out my phone, took crisp, high-resolution photographs of every single text message, bank statement, forged credit application, and email thread on his laptop. I backed up the raw data files to three separate cloud drives and an encrypted thumb drive.
Then, I took a screenshot of the pending $150,000 transfer, clicked CANCEL TRANSACTION, and changed the master password for my corporate accounts, personal banking, and mortgage portals.
My phone rang in my hand. The caller ID read: Javier.
I answered on the second ring, leaning back against the sofa.
“Naomi!” Javier’s voice boomed frantically through the speaker, heavy with artificial anger. “I’m outside the gate! My laptop is on the chair! Bring it down right now!”
“No, Javier,” I said, my tone as flat and sharp as a razor blade. “I don't think I will.”
“Don't play games with me!” he barked. “My mother is crying in the car! You humiliated us! Give me my briefcase!”
“I saw Vanessa’s message, Javier.”
Silence fell over the line. Complete, absolute silence.
“I canceled the $150,000 wire transfer,” I continued smoothly. “I locked you out of Luminary Beauty’s lines of credit. And tomorrow at eight in the morning, my legal team is filing for divorce and reporting you for corporate bank fraud.”
“Naomi—wait! Listen to me!” Javier stammered, his confident voice instantly collapsing into sheer panic. “It’s not what you think! Vanessa is just an investor! Let me come up! We can talk about this!”
“If you set foot in this building again, security will have you arrested for trespassing,” I said. “Have a good night with your mother, Javier.”

I hung up, blocked his number, and turned to my brother with a genuine smile.
“Come on, Wyatt,” I said gently. “Let's clean up this mess and order some real food.”
