Chapter 7 - The Trial and the Settlement

Six months later, the Maricopa County Superior Court was in full session for the final decree of Larson v. Campbell.

The courtroom was quiet, save for the rustle of legal documents and the clicking of the court reporter’s typewriter.

Javier sat at the defense table wearing a blue county jail jumpsuit. His hair was buzzed short, his posture ruined, his face thin and hollowed out after spending six months in pretrial detention unable to afford his two-hundred-thousand-dollar bail.

Lydia sat in the gallery behind him, wearing cheap clothes from a local donation center, looking broken, old, and completely stripped of her pride.

Across the aisle, I sat calmly beside Rachel Stern, wearing a crisp ivory blazer and trousers.

Judge Eleanor Vance reviewed the massive stack of forensic evidence, bank records, and video footage on her bench.

“Mr. Campbell,” Judge Vance said, her voice dry and unyielding as she looked over her glasses at Javier. “In my twenty-two years on the bench, I have rarely seen a clearer case of financial betrayal, fraud, and marital bad faith.”

Javier kept his head down, unable to meet the judge’s eyes.

“The evidence clearly demonstrates,” Judge Vance continued, “that you systematically forged your wife’s signature, attempted to convert over $150,000 in corporate funds for illicit personal real estate purchases, and committed gross fraud against Chase Commercial Bank.”

The judge struck her gavel down with a sharp THUD.

“The court orders as follows:”

“1. The marriage between Naomi Larson and Javier Campbell is irrevocably dissolved.”

“2. The prenuptial agreement is upheld in full. Mr. Campbell is awarded zero equity in Luminary Beauty Cosmetics, the Crestview apartment, or any associated intellectual property.”

“3. Mr. Campbell is ordered to pay $62,000 in restitution to Luminary Beauty for fraudulent corporate credit card usage, along with full legal fees incurred by the petitioner.”

“4. Regarding the criminal charges of forgery and grand larceny, Mr. Campbell is sentenced to three years in a state correctional facility, followed by three years of supervised probation.”

Lydia let out a choked scream from the gallery, burying her face in her trembling hands.

Javier didn't move. He sat motionless, staring blankly at the dark wood of the defense table as the bailiffs stepped forward to escort him back to the holding cell.

As he was being led away, Javier stopped near my table. He looked at me through eyes filled with profound, irreversible regret.

“Naomi…” he whispered, his voice trembling. “I’m sorry. I lost everything.”

I looked at him—the man I had once loved, the man I had supported, the man who had let his mother slap my brother for eating a piece of chicken.

May you like

“You didn't lose everything, Javier,” I said softly, looking him straight in the eyes. “You threw it away.”

The bailiff pulled his chain, dragging him through the heavy doors into the back hallway, where the door slammed shut with a heavy metallic click.
