Chapter 6 - The Phoenix Gala

Two weeks later, the Grand Ballroom of the Arizona Biltmore Resort was packed with over four hundred business executives, investors, and socialites for the annual Phoenix Business Excellence Awards.
Crystal chandeliers hung from the high ceilings, and the air hummed with the sound of string quartets and popping champagne corks.
At Table One, front and center near the stage, sat my team from Luminary Beauty.
I wore a floor-length emerald silk dress, my dark hair styled in soft glamorous waves, diamond earrings catching the light with every move. Beside me sat Wyatt, looking sharp and handsome in a fitted black tuxedo, chatting comfortably with my corporate investors.
In two short weeks, without Javier’s fraudulent drain on my company accounts, Luminary Beauty’s profit margins had already jumped fifteen percent.
Suddenly, a slight commotion occurred near the entrance of the ballroom.
Standing near the coat check were Javier and Lydia.
How they had managed to get past the main security gate was a mystery, but they looked completely out of place. Javier wore an ill-fitting, wrinkled suit he had pulled from his old closet, his face pale and sunken. Lydia wore an outdated lace dress, her hair messy, looking around frantically for food trays being carried by waiters.
Javier caught sight of me sitting at the head table, surrounded by city council members and wealthy investors.
His eyes burned with a mixture of desperate hope and bitter humiliation. He pushed past a waiter and marched straight toward Table One, with Lydia trailing behind him like a ragged shadow.
“Naomi!” Javier called out, his voice loud enough to draw the attention of nearby tables.
My security guard, David, immediately stood up from his seat, but I held up a gentle hand, stopping him.
I stood up slowly, smoothing my emerald dress, facing my husband in front of four hundred of the most influential people in Phoenix.
“Javier,” I said calmly. “You’re trespassing on a private corporate event.”
Javier stopped three feet from me, his eyes wide, looking at my dress, my diamonds, and then at Wyatt, who sat calmly watching him with a glass of sparkling water in his hand.
“Naomi… please,” Javier whispered, dropping his aggressive act completely, his voice cracking with emotion. “I’m begging you. Just talk to me for five minutes. The bank seized my truck. The landlord evicted my mother. We’ve been living in my friend’s garage for three days!”
A low murmur echoed across the surrounding tables.
Lydia stepped forward, her former arrogance completely gone, replaced by pitiful desperation.
“Naomi… please, daughter,” Lydia whimpered, reaching out her shaking hands. “I was wrong. I shouldn't have struck your brother. I was tired… I had a headache… I didn't mean it! Please don't let us starve! We’re family!”
I looked at Lydia. I looked at her messy hair, her fake tears, and the pathetic desperation in her eyes.
“Family?” I asked, my voice carrying clearly across the silent ballroom. “Family doesn't slap an eighteen-year-old boy across the mouth because he was hungry after a seven-hour bus ride.”
Lydia flinched as if she had been hit.
“Family doesn't forge corporate signatures to steal $150,000 to buy luxury villas for mistresses,” I continued, looking straight into Javier’s terrified eyes.
The crowd gasped loudly. Several prominent business owners began whispering among themselves, pulling out their phones.
“Naomi, don't do this here!” Javier choked out, tears swelling in his eyes.
“You told me I was nothing without you, Javier,” I said, stepping closer to him, my voice dropping to an icy, powerful whisper. “Look around this room. Every investor here, every award on that stage, every dollar in my bank account was built by my hands, my brain, and my sweat. You were just a bad investment I took too long to write off.”
At that moment, two uniformed Phoenix police officers walked into the ballroom, accompanied by the event’s head of security.
“Javier Campbell and Lydia Campbell?” the lead officer asked, stepping up behind them.
Javier turned around, his face pale as paper. “Yes?”
“You are under arrest for outstanding warrants regarding corporate bank fraud, identity theft, and criminal trespass.”
The cold metallic clack-clack of handcuffs echoed loudly in the pristine ballroom as the officers locked Javier’s hands behind his back.
Lydia began wailing loudly, thrashing against the second officer’s grip. “Get your hands off me! My son is an executive! Naomi, save us! SAVE US!”
I didn't say a word. I didn't even blink.
May you like
I simply sat back down in my chair, picked up my crystal glass, and raised it toward my brother.
The crowd broke into polite, enthusiastic applause as the officers dragged Javier and his mother out of the ballroom, their desperate screams fading into the cool night air.
