Chapter 3 - The Secret Files

The federal agents escorted Vanessa out through the service exit, her designer heels clicking frantically against the concrete until the heavy metal doors slammed shut, cutting off her hysterical weeping.

The ballroom was left in an echoing, shell-shocked stillness. The two hundred guests—wealthy socialites, corporate executives, and local politicians—sat frozen in their seats, too terrified to whisper, too stunned to leave.

My father sank heavily into an empty chair at the head table, clutching his chest. His arrogance had completely evaporated, leaving behind a frail, bewildered old man.

“Chloe,” my father whispered, staring up at me as if he were seeing a ghost. “What... what is all of this? What did you mean about invoices and shell companies?”

I walked slowly toward the head table, Ethan pacing smoothly beside me, his hand resting lightly and protectively on the small of my back.

“It means, Dad, that while you were busy spending millions of dollars on Vanessa’s corporate expansion and boasting about her brilliant business acumen, she was selling classified defense logistics data to foreign intelligence fronts,” I said evenly.

Before my father could formulate a reply, Marcus Vance, the NCIS special agent, stepped forward, opening a thick leather portfolio and placing it on the white-clothed table. He laid out a series of printed financial flowcharts, bank wire confirmations, and encrypted email intercepts.

“Mr. Sterling,” Agent Vance said politely, though his eyes were as cold as winter stone. “Your eldest daughter didn't just embezzle from Sterling Logistics to fund her lavish lifestyle. She used the company as a front to launder bribe money paid by defense contractors seeking classified staging routes used by Naval Special Warfare Command.”

Ethan shifted slightly, his jaw tightening. Those staging routes were the very paths his men used on high-risk deployment missions overseas. A leak there didn't just cost money—it cost lives.

“She compromised my team’s deployment data,” Ethan said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. He looked down at me, a profound depth of raw emotion flashing in his dark eyes. “And you knew. That’s why you agreed to marry me so quickly. Not because you were pressured, but because you knew her arrest was scheduled for today, and you needed federal jurisdiction backed by an active military commander to ensure she couldn't buy her way out of it with family judges.”

I met his gaze, offering a small, apologetic smile.

“I knew she was going to try something at the wedding,” I admitted softly. “She couldn't stand the spotlight being on me. When she insisted on bringing that 'special gift' box herself, I flagged it for your executive security detail four days ago.”

My father stared at us, his mouth opening and closing soundlessly. “You... you used your own wedding as a trap?”

“No, Dad,” I replied, my voice sharpening. “Vanessa turned my wedding into a crime scene. I just made sure the right people were waiting when she dropped the trigger.”
