Chapter 7 - The Final Operation

The secure operations room at the naval base downtown was humming with quiet tension.

Six Navy SEAL operators stood around a massive holographic tactical map, while federal cyber-crime agents hammered away at their keyboards, tracing the digital footprints of the international espionage ring that had partnered with Vanessa.

I sat at the primary console, my fingers flying across the dual monitors as I cracked the encryption keys on the Zurich front company’s ledger.

“They’re attempting a hard-fork transfer of thirty million dollars into an unmapped cryptocurrency wallet,” I called out across the room, my eyes locked on the scrolling code. “If they complete the transfer, the money—and the identities of their deep-cover assets—will vanish into an untraceable ledger.”

“Not on my watch,” Ethan said, standing right behind my chair, his hand resting firmly on the backrest. He looked at his team leader. “Ghost Team, move in on the Zurich server farm coordinates provided by Miss Sterling. Coordinate with Interpol to physically seize the hardware.”

“Copy that, Commander. Executing now,” the team leader responded into his comms headset.

For ten agonizing minutes, the room was dead silent save for the furious clicking of keyboards and the robotic drone of the server fans.

On my screen, a progress bar crept forward: 85%... 90%... 95%...

“They’re fighting back with a localized denial-of-service counter-attack,” I muttered, my brow furrowing as firewall alerts flashed red across my monitors. “They’re trying to fry our decryption terminal.”

Ethan leaned closer, his shoulder brushing mine, his presence an absolute anchor of calm in the chaotic digital storm.

“Bypass their firewall through the secondary military gateway,” Ethan instructed quietly, his breath warm against my ear. “Use the back-door protocol you wrote for the Department of Defense audit last year.”

I smirked, my fingers executing the complex command sequence in a matter of seconds.

Access granted.

A brilliant green checkmark flooded the screen.

“Got them,” I announced, hitting the master lock key. “Accounts frozen. All data retrieved. Server coordinates locked and transmitted to Interpol.”

A cheer erupted around the operations room. Ethan let out a deep breath, pulling me up from the chair and wrapping his arms around me in a crushing, triumphant embrace as the team applauded.

“Remind me never to play poker with you, Mrs. Cole,” Ethan whispered, kissing the top of my head.

“You couldn't afford the stakes, Commander,” I smiled against his shoulder.
