Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

By sunrise, the Sterling Logistics empire was crumbling faster than a sandcastle in a tidal wave.
While federal search warrants were being executed at Vanessa’s suburban mansion and corporate offices, Ethan and I sat in the glass-walled study of his secure coastal home, watching financial news networks broadcast breaking reports of the raid.
“...Federal authorities have seized all assets belonging to Sterling Logistics following the dramatic arrest of senior executive Vanessa Sterling-Moss at a society wedding last night...” the news anchor reported over footage of black-jacketed federal agents carting boxes of evidence out of corporate headquarters. “...Sources close to the investigation reveal that the company’s entire international supply chain is tied to a massive national security breach...”
I took a slow sip of black coffee, watching the screen without emotion.
Ethan sat across the desk from me, his laptop open to a secure terminal where encrypted financial audits scrolled past in green text. He looked up, his intense eyes softening as he studied my face.
“You haven’t slept,” he said quietly.
“Adrenaline has a way of keeping fatigue at bay,” I replied, setting my mug down. “Besides, the hardest part isn't arresting Vanessa. It’s untangling the mess she made of our father’s company. If Sterling Logistics collapses entirely, hundreds of innocent employees who had nothing to do with her treason will lose their pensions.”
“You care about them,” Ethan observed, a hint of admiration coloring his tone.
“I grew up in the warehouses of that company, Ethan,” I said, leaning back in the leather chair. “While Vanessa was at country club galas, I was down on the loading docks learning how shipping manifests worked. My father built that business from the ground up forty years ago. It breaks my heart to watch Vanessa’s greed tear it down.”
Ethan stood up, walked around the mahogany desk, and pulled me gently into his arms. His embrace was solid, warm, and absolute—a stark contrast to the cold, transactional relationships I had endured my entire life within my family.
“It won't fall,” Ethan murmured into my hair. “Because you’re going to save it. The Department of Defense needs a reliable logistics partner, not a criminal syndicate. If you take the helm as primary majority shareholder through your grandmother’s trust, the government will restructure the debt.”
I looked up at him, surprised. “You know about the trust?”
“Chloe, I’m a SEAL commander,” he grinned, a rare, breathtaking smile breaking across his rugged face. “Do you really think I didn't run a complete background check on the woman I was marrying? I knew about your trust fund, your federal contracting audits, and your undercover work six months before you ever walked down that aisle.”

I laughed, hitting his chest lightly. “You stalked me?”
“I secured my perimeter,” he corrected smoothly, leaning down to press a warm, lingering kiss against my lips. “And now, Mrs. Cole, we have a corporate empire to rescue.”
