Chapter 6 - Unraveling the Conspiracy

The transition of power at Sterling Logistics was swift and uncompromising. With the backing of federal oversight and Ethan’s military connections, we purged every corrupt executive, severed ties with shady foreign shell companies, and restructured the debt into clean, government-compliant contracts.

My father came to my newly appointed office on the thirtieth floor of the downtown tower one afternoon, looking older and frailer than his seventy years warranting.

He stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, looking out over the bustling city skyline where our cargo trucks moved along the highway.

“I failed you, Chloe,” my father said quietly, not turning around to face me. “I spent your entire life prioritizing Vanessa because she was loud, ambitious, and demanded applause. I treated you like a shadow because you didn't need constant validation.”

I looked up from the quarterly financial report I was reviewing.

“You didn't just prioritize her, Dad,” I said honestly, letting the words carry the weight of years of silent hurt. “You enabled her. You blinded yourself to her corruption because her arrogance matched your own vanity.”

Father flinched as if he had been physically struck. He turned slowly, his eyes shining with unshed tears.

“Can you ever forgive me?” he asked, his voice cracking.

“Forgiveness isn't a transaction, Dad,” I replied softly. “It takes time. But you’re still my father, and you’re welcome to be part of my life—on the condition that you leave the arrogance behind.”

Before he could answer, the office door swung open without a knock.

Ethan strode in, wearing his tactical civilian gear, carrying a secure military tablet under his arm. He stopped when he saw my father, nodding politely before turning his undivided attention to me.

“Chloe, we just got a ping from NCIS,” Ethan said, his expression turning sharp and professional. “The foreign operatives who bought Vanessa’s stolen data are trying to reroute an offshore wire transfer through a secondary front company in Zurich. If we don't freeze it within the hour, the digital trail goes cold.”

I stood up immediately, the hesitation vanishing from my mind.

“Fire up the secure terminal,” I said, buttoning my blazer. “Let’s shut them down for good.”
