Chapter 3 - The Arrest and the Exposure

The silence in the living room was so profound you could hear the soft, rhythmic hum of the refrigerator in the kitchen.

Brooke, one of the female guests who had lowered her eyes during the assault, burst into nervous tears. “I... I didn't want any trouble. I tried to look away...”

“Looking away makes you an accomplice to cowardice, Brooke,” Elena said coldly, not sparing her a glance. She turned her attention back to Marcus, who was backing away toward the sofa as the two sheriff deputies closed in on him.

“Mr. Marcus Vance,” the lead deputy said, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. “You are under arrest for domestic assault in the third degree, violation of postpartum medical protection orders, and physical endangerment. Turn around and place your hands behind your back.”

“Wait! You can’t do this!” Marcus shouted, thrashing his arms away as the deputies grabbed his wrists and forced them behind his back. The heavy steel cuffs snapped shut with a definitive click. “My father is a major donor to the police commissioner! You’ll all be fired by morning! Nolan, tell them! Bro, say something!”

Nolan kept his eyes fixed firmly on the floor, refusing to make eye contact. None of the six friends uttered a single word in his defense. The brotherhood they had toasted with whiskey twenty minutes earlier dissolved the moment real consequences walked through the door.

As the deputies hauled Marcus toward the front door, he craned his neck, glaring at me with venomous hatred. “You think you’ve won, Claire?! You’re broke! I’ll strip you of everything! You’ll be living on the street by next week!”

“Take him out,” Elena instructed the deputies calmly.

The front door slammed shut behind them, cutting off Marcus’s muffled threats.

The paramedic gently lifted me onto the sofa, checking my blood pressure and applying a cold compress to my bruised cheek while Elena lifted little Lily from her cradle, holding the infant safely against her chest with practiced tenderness.

“You’re safe now, Claire,” Elena said softly, kissing the top of Lily’s head before looking at me. “And as for his threat about being broke... well, Marcus is about to find out just how badly he miscalculated who actually owns this house.”
