Chapter 4 - The Hospital and the Audit

By midnight, I was resting in a private VIP room at Meridian Memorial Hospital, accompanied by Elena, while little Lily slept peacefully in the adjacent nursery bassinet under expert pediatric care.
My physical injuries—a split lip, a bruised cheek, and acute abdominal strain—were being treated with medication and careful monitoring, but the emotional weight of the betrayal was heavy.
Elena sat in the leather armchair beside my bed, tapping away furiously on her laptop while sipping a cup of black coffee.
“The D.A.’s office is already preparing a comprehensive felony indictment,” Elena reported without looking up from her screen. “Between the audio recording, the medical reports from your postpartum checkup four days ago, and the witness statements from the deputies, Marcus won't be seeing daylight outside a holding cell anytime soon.”
“What about the house and the accounts?” I asked quietly, my voice raspy.
Elena stopped typing, looked up, and offered a fierce, triumphant smile. “That’s the best part. Marcus spent the last three years bragging to his colleagues that he bought this estate and built our financial foundation. But he completely forgot—or chose to ignore—the prenuptial agreement and the family trust.”
She turned the laptop screen toward me.
“Two weeks before our wedding, when Marcus was drowning in credit card debt from his failed startup, our father transferred the deed of this entire property directly into an irrevocable trust bearing my name and your maiden name. Marcus’s name is nowhere on the title. He was merely listed as an authorized resident.”
I stared at the document, a slow sense of relief washing over me. For months, he had treated me like a tenant in my own home, threatening to throw me out whenever I questioned his spending.
“And his business accounts?” I asked.
“That’s where things get really interesting,” Elena said, her eyes narrowing with professional glee. “As a forensic accountant, you always kept meticulous records, didn't you? Well, I cross-referenced his corporate expense reports with your private cloud backups. Not only has Marcus been embezzling client development funds to pay for his luxury sports car, but he also tried to secretly mortgage our summer cabin in Vermont by forging your signature on a quitclaim deed.”

I closed my eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath. “He really thought he could erase me.”
“He tried,” Elena replied coldly. “And now the legal system is going to erase him.”
