Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Happy Ending

A full year after the rainy night that changed everything, the calendar turned once again to the sweet, budding promise of spring.

The lawn of the estate was a vibrant emerald green, the cherry blossoms were bursting into soft pink clouds along the driveway, and the air carried the sweet scent of damp earth and blooming lilacs.

We hosted a small, joyous gathering on the back stone patio to celebrate Lily’s first birthday.

There were no arrogant colleagues, no forced servitude, and no walking on eggshells.

Instead, the patio was filled with people who truly mattered: Elena, our father, close friends who had stood by us through the darkest storms, and little Lily, who was currently crawling across the sunlit grass in a bright yellow dress, chasing a glowing cloud of soap bubbles with a delighted squeal.

I stood on the edge of the patio, holding a crystal glass of sparkling cider, feeling the warm afternoon breeze brush against my face.

Elena walked up beside me, clinking her glass gently against mine with a warm, knowing smile.

“Happy first birthday to Lily,” Elena toasted softly. “And happy anniversary of your true freedom, Claire.”

I smiled, looking out at my daughter laughing in the sunlight, then turning my gaze toward the horizon where the future stretched out wide, beautiful, and completely limitless.

“Thank you, Elena,” I replied, taking a slow sip of cider. “We made it.”

The nightmare was officially behind us. The cage was broken. And the rest of our lives belonged entirely to us.
