Chapter 7 - The Interrogation of Hearts

The ride back to the compound was silent, save for the hum of the engine and the quiet hiss of the car heater.

In the back seat, Dr. Evans was wrapping heavy medical gauze around Alessio’s wounded shoulder. Across from him, Sienna sat wrapped in a heavy velvet blanket, a damp cloth pressed to her bruised cheek.

Alessio stared at her. The anger that had sustained him through the gunfight was slowly melting into a deep, painful ache.

"Why?" Alessio asked, his voice low and ragged. "Why four years, Sienna? Why let me believe I buried you?"

Sienna lowered the cloth, her hand trembling. "Because I saw what your life was, Alessio! The week before I found out I was pregnant, your mother died. Two days later, three of your men were executed outside my apartment building! I was a doctor—I saved lives! I couldn't bring two innocent babies into a world where every morning could be their last!"

"So you lied to me?" Alessio’s voice cracked slightly—a sound Silas had never heard in twenty years. "You let me live in hell?"

"I lived in hell too!" Sienna shouted, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "Do you think it was easy? Raising two identical girls in a tiny cabin in northern Michigan, terrified every time a car drove past? I had your picture hidden under my mattress, Alessio! Every night, they asked me about their father, and every night I told them you were a king who protected people!"

She looked at him, her chest heaving. "And then Delgado’s men found my credit trail. They raided the house three days ago. I barely had time to put the girls on a private bus with my life savings to a trusted contact in Chicago. I gave Aria your mother’s ring because I knew... I knew if there was one man in this godforsaken world who could protect them from Delgado, it was you."

Alessio reached out. His large, calloused, blood-stained hand hovered in the air between them for a second before gently cupping her jaw.

May you like

"You should have trusted me," he murmured softly.

"I trust you with their lives," Sienna whispered, leaning her face into his palm. "I always did. I was just afraid for yours."
