Chapter 4 - Shadows Over Black Mountain

By dawn, the mist over Black Mountain had thickened into a heavy, milky fog that blanketed the valley, obscuring the pine trees and making the small town feel entirely isolated from the rest of the world.

Downstairs in June Whitaker’s antique shop, Gavin Roarke and four discreet, heavily armed security operatives had established a perimeter. Two black SUVs were concealed in the barn behind the property, and signal jammers were activated to monitor local radio frequencies.

In the small apartment upstairs, the atmosphere was transformed.

The cold, lonely room was filled with the rich aroma of fresh coffee and breakfast that Declan’s personal chef had prepared and sent up from the local inn Declan had quietly bought out hours earlier.

Amelia sat on the edge of the bed, wrapped in a plush cashmere blanket Declan had wrapped around her shoulders. She watched him walk back and forth across the small room, his dark suit jacket discarded, his shirt sleeves rolled up to his elbows, revealing his muscular forearms. He was speaking softly into a secure satellite phone.

"Keep the short positions open on Calloway Maritime," Declan instructed into the receiver, his tone authoritative and sharp. "If Elias tries to transfer liquidity out of his Gulf accounts, freeze the wire transfers through the Federal Reserve injunction. I want him blind by noon."

He paused, listening to his chief financial officer on the line.

"I don't care about the board meeting in Chicago," Declan snapped quietly. "My presence in North Carolina is non-negotiable. Manage the news cycle."

He ended the call and tossed the phone onto the dresser, instantly turning his attention back to Amelia. The cold, ruthless expression on his face vanished, replaced instantly by an intense, tender concern.

He walked over to the bed, sitting down beside her. He reached out, taking her hands in his, checking her warm fingers as if searching for any sign of distress.

"How are you feeling?" Declan asked softly. "Did you sleep at all?"

"A little," Amelia admitted, offering a soft smile. "It's strange... having you here. For four months, I convinced myself I was alone."

Declan’s jaw clenched with lingering guilt. He raised her hand to his lips, pressing a warm kiss against her knuckles. "You will never be alone again, Amelia. I swear it."

A gentle knock sounded at the door. Gavin Roarke stepped into the room, holding a encrypted tablet. His expression was grim.

"Declan," Gavin said quietly. "We have a problem."

Declan didn't let go of Amelia’s hand, but his posture straightened instantly. "Report."

"Savannah Calloway didn't stay in Chicago after you left," Gavin said, tapping the tablet screen. "She tracked the flight plan of your private jet to Asheville Regional Airport. Her personal security team landed in North Carolina two hours ago. They’ve hired local private investigators in Buncombe County."

Amelia felt her stomach tighten. "How did she find out?"

"Savannah isn't stupid," Gavin replied, looking at Amelia with respectful sympathy. "Declan abruptly canceled the joint press conference scheduled for this morning. Savannah knew Declan’s personal search team had been focused on North Carolina for the past forty-eight hours. She put the pieces together."

Declan stood up slowly, his dark eyes turning into cold slate. "Where is she now?"

"Her convoy was spotted twenty miles outside Black Mountain," Gavin said. "She’s heading this way. She thinks she’s coming to confront you about the engagement, but Elias has three of his heavy enforcers in her security detail. If they realize Amelia is here... if they realize she's pregnant..."

"They won't get within a hundred yards of this building," Declan said, his voice dropping into a register of absolute, terrifying authority. "Gavin, lock down the street. If any vehicle associated with Calloway Maritime crosses the town line, disable them."

"Declan, wait," Amelia said, standing up from the bed, the cashmere blanket slipping off her shoulders.

Declan turned to her instantly, his hands catching her elbows to steady her. "Stay seated, sweetheart. I'll handle this."

"No," Amelia said, looking directly into his dark eyes. "You can't just use force, Declan. If you fight Savannah’s security in the middle of this town, it will be on the national news in ten minutes. Elias Calloway will use the public chaos to claim you attacked his daughter, and the Department of Justice sting will collapse."

Declan stared at her, his mind calculating the variables at high speed. She was right. Elias Calloway was a master of media manipulation; an open gunfight in a small North Carolina town would give Calloway the legal cover he needed to claim persecution and flee the country with his offshore assets.

"She’s right, boss," Gavin agreed quietly. "We need to handle Savannah cleanly before Elias realizes his trap has failed."

Amelia took a deep breath, her hands resting over her belly. "Let me speak to her."

Declan’s reaction was instant and visceral. "Absolutely not."

"Declan, listen to me—"

"No, Amelia!" Declan growled, his grip on her arms tightening slightly, his dark eyes flashing with fierce protectiveness. "I spent four months living in a hell where I couldn't protect you! I am not letting that woman stand in the same room as you!"

"Savannah thinks I'm a helpless maid or an uneducated mistress who ran away because my feelings were hurt," Amelia said firmly, her voice ringing with a strength she hadn't known she possessed four months ago. "She doesn't know I know about the federal investigation. She doesn't know I know about the offshore accounts. If I show her that her father’s empire is already dead, she will crumble, Declan. Savannah is a coward who relies on her father’s power."

Declan looked at her face, seeing the fierce, unyielding determination shining in her eyes. The quiet, timid art restorer who used to hide in her studio was gone. In her place stood a woman fighting for her child, her future, and the man she loved.

Declan let out a long, ragged breath, pulling her close and pressing a fierce kiss against her forehead.

"If she says one word that disrespects you," Declan whispered against her skin, "I will destroy everything her family owns before nightfall."
