Chapter 8 - Forever After the Rain

One year later.

The summer sun beamed down on the sprawling manicured lawn of the Lake Geneva estate. A light breeze rustled through the oak trees, carrying the sweet scent of blooming hydrangeas and fresh lake water.

A small, elegant white altar had been set up near the edge of the water, decorated with white roses and eucalyptus—and notably, not a single lily in sight.

Gathered on the lawn were fifty of their closest, true friends: Mrs. June Whitaker, who had flown in from North Carolina in a lovely lavender dress; Gavin Roarke and his security team, looking handsome in tailored charcoal suits; the medical staff from Asheville who had cared for Amelia; and trusted colleagues who had proven their loyalty.

Standing at the altar, looking impossibly handsome in a bespoke black tuxedo, was Declan Voss. He stood straight and tall, but his hands were slightly nervous as he adjusted his cuffs, his dark eyes fixed entirely on the house at the top of the hill.

The soft music of a string quartet began to play.

Down the stone path walked little one-year-old Lily Voss, wearing a tiny white dress, holding the hand of Mrs. June Whitaker, tossing white rose petals onto the grass with messy delight.

Then came Amelia.

Declan’s breath caught in his throat, his chest tightening with an emotion so deep it felt like a physical wave.

Amelia was a vision of breathtaking, ethereal beauty. She wore an off-the-shoulder gown of delicate French lace and flowing silk that trailed softly behind her over the grass. Her dark hair was styled in romantic waves, adorned with tiny pearl pins, and her skin radiated a healthy, glowing brilliance.

In her hands, she held a small bouquet of white roses and yellow freesia.

As she reached the altar, Declan stepped forward, taking her small hands into his broad, warm palms. The connection was instantaneous—an electric, steady grounding that made the rest of the world vanish into absolute insignificance.

The officiant stepped forward, his voice echoing warmly over the lake. "We are gathered here today to unite Declan Voss and Amelia Hart in holy matrimony—a union forged in resilience, proven in truth, and crowned with unconditional love."

When it came time for the vows, Declan didn't look at the paper in his pocket. He looked directly into Amelia’s dark, shining eyes, holding her hands tightly against his chest.

"Amelia," Declan said, his voice deep, clear, and rich with emotion. "I spent my entire life building walls, managing risks, and fighting wars in the dark. I thought power was about control. But the day I met you, you showed me that true power is the courage to be soft. When you left, my world turned to ash. When I found you in that small room in North Carolina, I pledged my life, my fortune, and my soul to you. I promise to honor you, to protect you, to listen to you, and to love you beyond the end of my days."

Tears of joy sparkled in Amelia’s eyes as she smiled up at him.

"Declan," Amelia spoke softly, her voice carrying across the quiet lawn. "Four months after I ran, I thought love was something that could be burned away like an ultrasound picture in a sink. But you showed me that true love doesn't burn away—it stands in the rain, it kneels in the dark, and it fights through the storm to pull you back into the light. You are my home, Declan. My husband, my protector, and my absolute best friend."

"By the power vested in me," the officiant declared with a broad smile, "I now pronounce you husband and wife. Declan, you may kiss your bride."

Declan didn't wait another second. He wrapped his strong arms around Amelia’s waist, lifting her slightly off her feet, and pulled her into a deep, passionate, breathtaking kiss that echoed with all the promises of their past, present, and infinite future.

The crowd erupted into joyous applause and cheers.

Little Lily ran up to them, giggling happily, grabbing at the hem of Amelia’s lace gown. Declan lowered Amelia gently to her feet, leaning down to scoop their laughing daughter into his arms, holding both of his women close against his heart.

As the sun began to set over the golden waters of Lake Geneva, casting a warm, luminous glow over the estate, Amelia rested her head against her husband’s shoulder, holding her daughter’s soft hand.

The ashes of the past were gone forever, scattered by the wind. In their place stood a family—unbroken, untouchable, and bound by a love that would never freeze again.
