Chapter 5 - The Art of Deception

At 2:00 PM, the rain ceased, leaving the air thick with mist and the smell of damp earth.

Inside the main gallery of June Whitaker’s antique shop, surrounded by Victorian mahogany tables, tarnished silver tea sets, and seventeenth-century oil paintings, Savannah Calloway stood waiting.

She wore an impeccably tailored cream-colored trench coat, high-heeled leather boots, and dark sunglasses despite the grey light streaming through the shop windows. Her blonde hair was styled in flawless waves, but her red lipstick could not hide the sharp, furious tension around her mouth.

Two broad-shouldered security guards stood near the shop entrance, their hands tucked inside their dark jackets.

The door to the upstairs apartment opened.

Amelia walked down the wooden staircase smoothly, step by step. She wore a dark green sweater dress that comfortably accommodated her rounded belly, her dark hair falling gracefully over her shoulders.

Behind her, Declan descended like a dark shadow, his hands in his pockets, his posture towering, imposing, and utterly cold. Gavin Roarke stood at the top of the stairs, his hand resting casually inside his jacket.

Savannah’s eyes locked onto Amelia. Her gaze dropped instantly to Amelia’s abdomen, and the color completely drained from Savannah’s face.

"You..." Savannah gasped, her voice shrill with shock and rage. She turned her furious gaze toward Declan. "Declan! What is the meaning of this?! You canceled the press conference... you vanished from Chicago... for her?!"

Declan didn't even look at Savannah with emotion. He walked over to Amelia’s side, placing his large hand firmly, possessively, against the small of her back.

"Watch your tone, Savannah," Declan said, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet register. "You are speaking to my wife."

Savannah froze as if she had been slapped. "Wife...? You... you aren't married!"

"The paperwork was filed in private this morning," Declan lied seamlessly, his dark eyes fixed on Savannah with cold disdain. "Which means any threat to Amelia, any insult to her or my child, is an act of war against Voss Logistics."

Savannah let out a harsh, hysterical laugh. "You're insane! You ruined our merger for a pregnant maid?! My father will crush you, Declan! He’s freezing your Gulf shipping routes right now! He’s pulling the Calloway capital out of your board!"

Amelia took a step forward, stepping out from behind Declan’s shadow. She looked directly into Savannah’s furious eyes with absolute composure.

"Your father isn't freezing anything, Savannah," Amelia said softly.

Savannah glared at her. "Shut up! You don't know anything about shipping or capital, you common little—"

"—I know about art authentication," Amelia interrupted smoothly, her voice calm, clear, and authoritative. "And I know about provenances."

Savannah blinked, momentarily thrown off balance. "What?"

"Three weeks ago," Amelia said, stepping closer to a table displaying old documents, "I was reviewing digital manifests from Calloway Maritime’s private storage vaults in New Orleans. Your father has been using hollowed-out seventeen-century Dutch oil paintings to ship forged securities and unrefined platinum bullion through Gulf ports."

Savannah’s jaw dropped. The arrogance on her face began to fracture into genuine panic.

"How... how do you know that?" Savannah whispered.

"Because I authenticated one of those paintings for a private collector two years ago," Amelia said, her dark eyes shining with sharp intelligence. "I recognized the craquelure pattern on the digital manifest your father submitted to the maritime customs registry. I gave the file to Declan’s security team six hours ago. The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Justice unsealed thirty-four criminal indictments against Elias Calloway at noon today."

Savannah’s phone in her trench coat pocket began to ring violently.

She pulled it out with trembling hands. The caller ID displayed: DAD - URGENT.

Savannah answered, pressing the phone to her ear. "Dad...? Dad, what’s going on?"

Through the phone speaker, muffled screams, shouting, and the heavy sound of doors being kicked open could be heard.

"Savannah!" Elias Calloway’s frantic, desperate voice came through the line. "The feds are here! They’ve seized the terminals in New Orleans! They’ve frozen all the offshore accounts in Grand Cayman! Where is Declan?! Tell him to call off his lawyers! Tell him—"

The line went dead with a loud burst of static.

Savannah stood frozen in the center of the antique shop, the phone slipping from her numb fingers and shattering on the hardwood floor.

She looked up at Declan, then at Amelia, seeing the unbreakable, formidable union standing before her. The great Calloway empire, built on decades of corruption and intimidation, had been dismantled in a single morning.

"Gavin," Declan commanded softly, not taking his eyes off Savannah. "Escort Miss Calloway to her vehicle. Ensure she and her security team leave North Carolina immediately. If they step foot near this property again, arrest them for federal trespass."

"Right away, boss," Gavin said, stepping forward.

Savannah didn't say another word. She turned on her heel, her head bowed in total humiliation, and fled the antique shop, her heavy boots clicking frantically against the floorboards as her guards hurried out behind her.
