Chapter 4 - The Investigation Begins

By 9:00 AM on New Year’s Day, Clara and Lily were sitting in the backseat of Ethan’s private SUV, being driven away from the cold studio apartment in the Bronx.

Ethan had refused to leave her there. Under the guise of needing her immediate assistance as a confidential consultant for Mercer Global, he had arranged for Clara and her daughter to be moved into a secure, fully furnished corporate apartment in Midtown Manhattan.

"This is temporary," Clara had insisted, holding Lily tight as they entered the luxury apartment building. "I don't take handouts, Mr. Mercer."

"It’s not a handout, Clara. It’s an advance on your consulting fee," Ethan had replied smoothly, handing her a new smartphone and a laptop. "You have information that can save my firm from walking into a fifteen-billion-dollar trap. You’re working for me now."

In his glass office atop the Mercer Global tower on January 2nd, Ethan summoned his top head of corporate security, Marcus Vance, a former intelligence officer.

"I need everything on Harmon Financial Services," Ethan ordered, tossing a file folder onto his desk. "Specifically, their CFO, Bradley Vance, and CEO, Richard Harmon. Look into BlueWave Logistics and Apex Consulting."

"Right away, sir," Marcus said, pausing before adding, "And the woman staying at the corporate suite, sir? Miss Whitmore?"

"She is under my personal protection," Ethan said, his voice dropping an octave, carrying an unmistakable edge. "No one touches her. No one talks to her without my permission."

Back in the Midtown suite, Clara sat at the desk with Lily sleeping soundly in a wooden crib nearby. For the first time in three months, Clara felt safe. The fridge was stocked with fresh organic food, the air was warm, and Lily had enough formula to last months.

Clara opened the laptop Ethan had provided and logged into her secure personal cloud drive. When Harmon Financial had escorted her out, they thought they had wiped her local drive. But Clara was too smart for them. She had kept manual notes—dates, transaction IDs, and internal routing codes—written down in a hidden digital journal.

She began typing, meticulously organizing the evidence that had cost her her career and nearly starved her child.

By mid-afternoon, Ethan arrived at her suite. He had shed his jacket, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, looking exhausted yet energized.

"What do you have?" he asked, walking over to her desk.

Clara leaned back, pointing at the screen. "It’s worse than I thought, Ethan. It wasn’t just twelve million. That was just one quarter. They’ve been siphoning money out of pension funds and client accounts for over two years. Richard Harmon isn’t just padding his profits—he’s covering up a massive insolvency."

Ethan stood behind her, leaning down to look at the numbers. Clara could smell his subtle scent—sandalwood and cedarwood—and felt a sudden, unexpected warmth radiate through her chest. It had been so long since anyone had treated her with respect, let alone stood shoulder-to-shoulder with her as an equal.

"If Mercer Global acquires them next week," Ethan muttered, his jaw tightening as his face sat inches from hers, "we take on all their hidden liabilities, and they walk away with three billion in liquid cash."

"They set you up," Clara said, looking up into his grey eyes. "They knew you were auditing them, so they accelerated the deal."

"They thought they swept you under the rug," Ethan said, a slow, dangerous smile spreading across his face. "They didn't realize you kept the broom."

Just then, Clara’s new phone chimed. It was an alert from her old apartment building’s security app.

She looked down at the screen. Two men in dark suits were currently standing outside her old Bronx apartment door, attempting to pick the lock.
