Chapter 6 - Shadows of the Past

Ethan opened the attachment. It was a fabricated police report and a forged internal memo claiming Clara had been caught stealing cash from Harmon Financial's petty accounts—a desperate, mud-slinging attempt to destroy her credibility before the board meeting.
Clara read the document over his shoulder, her face turning pale.
"It's a lie," she whispered, her voice cracking. "I never touched a cent. I swear to God, Ethan—"
"I know it's a lie, Clara," Ethan said immediately, slamming the laptop shut. "Harmon is drowning, and he’s throwing rocks at the person holding the lifesaver."
"If he presents this to your board of directors tomorrow," Clara said, pacing the floor nervously, "they will question my evidence! They’ll think I’m an angry ex-employee seeking revenge!"
"My board does not run Mercer Global," Ethan said, standing up and stepping into her path, catching her hands in his. "I run Mercer Global. And tomorrow morning, Richard Harmon is going to walk into a trap he spent three years building."
That night, neither of them slept much.
At 3:00 AM, Ethan walked into the kitchen to find Clara sitting by the floor-to-ceiling windows, staring out at the Manhattan skyline—the very skyline she had watched from her bleak Bronx window four nights ago.
"Can't sleep?" Ethan asked softly, pouring two cups of warm tea.
"I keep thinking about how close I was," Clara said, taking a cup from him. "On New Year's Eve, if I hadn't made that typo... if I hadn't gotten your number... where would Lily be right now? Where would I be?"
Ethan sat down on the window bench beside her. "I’ve thought about that too," he acknowledged. "On New Year's Eve, I was sitting right here, surrounded by eighty-seven million dollars worth of art and furniture, feeling like the poorest man on earth. I had everything, Clara. And I had absolutely nothing."
He reached out, his long fingers gently tucking a stray lock of dark hair behind her ear. Clara held her breath, her heart racing against her ribs.
"You didn't just ask for fifty dollars, Clara," Ethan murmured, his thumb brushing lightly across her cheekbone. "You saved me from disappearing into my own life."
May you like
Clara leaned into his touch, her eyes searching his. "Ethan..."
"Tomorrow, we finish this," Ethan said softly, his voice full of solemn promise. "And then... I want to show you what a real beginning looks like."
