Chapter 5 - A New Beginning & A Dangerous Threat

Ethan looked over Clara’s shoulder at the live feed on her phone. His expression hardened into carved granite.
He picked up his phone immediately. "Marcus. We have two hostiles at Miss Whitmore’s former residence. Intercept them. I want to know who sent them."
"On it, sir," Marcus replied.
Clara stood up, her breathing shallow, panic rising in her throat as she looked toward the crib where Lily was sleeping. "They know I took notes. They realized I didn't just forget about the discrepancies!"
Ethan placed two firm, warm hands on her shoulders. The contact was grounding, instantly cutting through her panic.
"Look at me, Clara," Ethan demanded softly. "You and Lily are safe here. Nobody knows you are in this building. The security in this tower is military-grade. I will not let anything happen to you."
"Why are you doing this?" Clara whispered, tears shining in her dark eyes. "You don't know me. You could have just sent fifty dollars and walked away."
Ethan looked down at her face, noticing the sharp intelligence in her dark eyes, the soft line of her jaw, and the quiet, stubborn dignity she carried despite everything life had thrown at her.
"Because for thirty years, everyone in my life has wanted something from me," Ethan said, his voice unusually raw. "My wealth, my status, my influence. You are the first person who apologized for asking for fifty dollars to feed her baby. You have more integrity than the entire board of directors sitting in my tower."
Two hours later, Marcus called Ethan back.
"The two men at the apartment were private investigators hired by Richard Harmon’s personal counsel," Marcus reported. "They were looking for hard drives, flash drives, or notebooks. They’ve been tracking Miss Whitmore’s bank activity and realized someone paid off her overdue rent and moved her out this morning."
"Did they see who moved her?" Ethan asked.
"No, sir. We used unmarked vehicles. But Harmon is panicked. He knows the acquisition audit closes in four days. He’s trying to scrub any loose ends."
"Good," Ethan said coldly. "Let him panic."
Over the next three days, Clara worked directly alongside Ethan in his private penthouse office, far from the prying eyes of the rest of Mercer Global. They spent hours combing through complex financial ledgers, constructing an airtight case against Harmon Financial.
During those long nights, the professional boundaries between them began to blur.
They shared quiet meals delivered from top restaurants while sitting on the living room floor. Ethan, the feared billionaire corporate raider, learned how to hold baby Lily, clumsily resting her small head against his broad chest while Clara laughed gently, instructing him how to support her neck.
"You're a natural," Clara teased one evening, watching Ethan carefully rock Lily to sleep while holding a financial ledger in his other hand.
"Don't spread rumors," Ethan replied dryly, though a soft, genuine smile lit up his face—a smile his executives had never seen in his entire corporate career. "It will ruin my reputation."
"Your reputation as a heartless dragon?" Clara asked softly, leaning against the sofa beside him.
Ethan looked at her, his gaze lingering on her soft lips and the warmth in her eyes. "Maybe I was a dragon," he whispered. "Until a midnight text reminded me what actually matters."
The moment stretched between them, heavy with unspoken tension, until Clara’s laptop buzzed with a red notification.
