Chapter 2 - The Second Hospital

The silence in the grand dining room was thick enough to choke on. The chandelier above cast a cold, glittering light over the marble floor, but the warmth of the room had vanished the moment Rocco Moretti’s voice dropped into that low, dangerous register.

"You knew the hospital," Rocco repeated, his words clipped and measured.

Valentina’s face tightened. For a fraction of a second, her composure fractured, revealing a cold panic she usually kept hidden behind layers of silk and expensive perfume. She took a half-step forward, her voice smoothing out into a practiced, defensive cadence.

"Rocco, think about what you are saying," Valentina urged, her eyes darting briefly to the newborn in Sophia’s arms before fixing back on the mafia boss. "St. Helena Private Hospital is the largest medical facility in the region. Thousands of children are born there every year. Of course I know the name. It is where half of the city's elite bring their children into the world. Why are you looking at me as if I committed a crime?"

"Because you didn't look at the baby," Rocco said quietly. "You looked at the bracelet."

Sophia, still standing barefoot on the cold marble, clutched the baby a little closer. She didn't understand all the adult words, but she understood danger. She had lived in this house long enough to recognize when a storm was coming. Her mother, Elena, was trembling beside her, wringing her hands in the fabric of her apron, terrified that her daughter’s courage would cost them their lives.

"Sir," Elena whispered, her voice shaking. "Please... she’s only eight. She didn't mean to cause trouble. I can take her and the baby away, we'll leave right now—"

"Quiet, Elena," Rocco commanded without turning his head. His eyes remained locked on Valentina.

Valentina’s jaw tightened. The elegant mask was slipping faster now. She could see the gears turning behind Rocco’s dark eyes—the terrifying, methodical logic of a man who ruled a criminal empire not through blind rage, but through absolute, unyielding investigation.

"Call the gates," Rocco said, raising his voice so it echoed down the vaulted corridors.

Within seconds, the heavy double doors at the end of the hall swung open, and Marco, the head of Rocco's personal security detail, stepped inside, flanked by two armed guards.

"Boss," Marco nodded sharply.

"Lock down the estate," Rocco ordered, his gaze never leaving Valentina. "Nobody enters. Nobody leaves. Check every security camera feed from the back kitchen corridor for the last six hours. I want every single person who stepped foot near that service entrance identified within the hour."

"Understood," Marco said, casting a suspicious glance toward Valentina and the group of lawyers standing near the edge of the room.

"Rocco, this is madness!" one of the senior lawyers protested, stepping forward with a briefcase in hand. "You are locking down a private residence over the word of a maid’s child? The board members are scheduled to arrive tomorrow morning for the succession review—"

"Let them wait," Rocco cut him off, his voice like cracking ice. "If there is trash being thrown into my house with a Moretti hospital bracelet attached to it, then the succession review is the least of our problems."

Valentina watched Marco leave to execute the orders, her hands clenching into fists inside the pockets of her silk robe. She knew that once Rocco started pulling at a thread, he would not stop until the entire tapestry unraveled.
