Chapter 6 - The Vault of Truth

The basement vault of the Moretti estate was built with reinforced concrete and steel doors thick enough to withstand a military mortar strike. Originally designed to store family bullion and sensitive corporate archives, it had occasionally served as a quiet place for delicate interrogations.
Vance sat tied to a metal chair in the center of the room, shivering despite the heavy heating vents. His face was pale, his expensive suit wrinkled and stained with mud from the garden.
The heavy steel door swung open, and Rocco walked in, followed by Marco and two guards. The shadows lengthened across the concrete floor as Rocco stopped a few feet away from the trembling assistant.
"Mr. Moretti... please," Vance stammered, his eyes darting toward the security cameras in the corner. "I was just following orders! Mrs. Moretti said—"
"I know what she said," Rocco interrupted, his voice cutting through the damp air like a razor. He pulled up a folding chair and sat down directly across from Vance, resting his elbows on his knees. "Let's talk about five years ago, Vance. Let's talk about the birth certificate at St. Helena Hospital."
Vance swallowed hard, his throat dry. "I... I don't know what you mean."
"My son was born healthy," Rocco said softly, leaning forward. "The doctors told me he died of respiratory failure within an hour. But you were the one who handled the hospital transfer paperwork. You were the one who signed off on the cremation."
Vance shook his head frantically. "Mrs. Moretti... she paid off the obstetrician. She told me the child was a liability to her own position in the family. She wanted complete control over the succession. She had the baby taken away in secret and raised by a trusted associate overseas... until recently, when security risks forced her to bring him back here to eliminate him permanently before the board meeting."
Rocco’s expression remained terrifyingly still. "And tonight?"
"Tonight... she found out someone was asking questions about the adoption records. She panicked. She ordered me to bring the child back from the safehouse and... and dispose of him quietly before you noticed." Vance began to cry, his composure completely dissolving. "I swear to God, Mr. Moretti, I didn't want to hurt the baby! I just left him by the service entrance thinking someone would find him in the morning!"
"You left my son in the trash," Rocco said.
Before Vance could speak another word, Rocco stood up. He didn't raise his voice, but the look in his eyes promised a retribution so thorough and absolute that no lawyer on earth could save the traitor.
"Marco," Rocco said quietly as he turned toward the exit. "Hand him over to federal authorities on federal kidnapping and conspiracy charges. Make sure every single asset he owns is seized before sunrise."

"And Mrs. Moretti?" Marco asked.
"Lock her in the east wing indefinitely. She will stand trial before the family council tomorrow morning."
