Chapter 5 - Sophia’s Testimony

The grandfather clock in the corner of the study chimed midnight, its deep, resonant gongs vibrating through the floorboards.

Sophia had fallen asleep curled up in the large leather armchair, her small hand still clutching the stuffed rabbit. Elena sat beside her, gently stroking the child's hair, watching Rocco with a mixture of awe and terror.

The door opened quietly, and Marco stepped inside, holding a waterproof evidence bag containing a dark wool coat and a set of keys.

"We found this behind the exterior generator shed," Marco reported, laying the bag on the edge of the desk. "It belongs to Vance. We also intercepted his phone before he could ditch it. There are text messages between him and a private clinic downtown."

Rocco inspected the phone through the transparent bag. He pressed the power button, unlocking it using a biometric bypass tool he kept in the drawer. He scrolled through the recent communications.

“Package secured from the nursery unit. Bring it to the north gate before midnight. Make sure it never reaches the main house,” one message read.

Another message, sent just twenty minutes ago from Valentina’s private number, replied: “Get rid of it cleanly. If Rocco finds out the boy survived, everything we built is finished.”

The room went completely still. Even the ticking of the grandfather clock seemed to fade into the background.

Rocco stood up slowly. The air around him felt heavy, charged with the quiet fury of a predator whose territory had been violated from within.

"Bring Vance to the basement vault," Rocco said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "And wake up the legal team. Tell them their services are no longer required for defense—they are going to take notes on a confession."

Marco nodded once and slipped out of the room.

Rocco looked down at Sophia, who stirred slightly in her sleep, murmuring something unintelligible about the rain. He walked over, picked up a heavy cashmere throw blanket from the sofa, and gently draped it over her shoulders.

For a man who believed only in systems and control, looking at the little girl who had saved his true bloodline made him realize something profound: sometimes, the most important things in life cannot be measured, calculated, or bought. They are simply given to you by grace.
