Chapter 2: The Impossible Echo

The man in the tactical coat did not run. He simply tilted his head, his gaze lingering on Rachel’s hand, which was tucked firmly into her scrub pocket. He was a predator who knew his prey was cornered, but the sudden wail of a code blue from the other side of the ward shattered his concentration for a split second.
Rachel didn’t hesitate. She threw a heavy metal chart rack into his path and scrambled through the service stairwell. Her heart was a frantic drum against her ribs. The baby wasn’t in the NICU. Where was she?
She burst into the hallway, adrenaline masking the ache in her legs. She found Dr. Maya Chen near the medication room, looking pale.
"Maya, where is she?" Rachel gasped.
"The police... they weren't police, Rachel," Maya whispered, clutching a tablet. "They had badges, but they were fake. I saw them take her. They had a thermal transport case. They didn't even acknowledge me."
Rachel pulled the silver key from her pocket. "They’re coming for this. Look at the inscription. Aethelgard Labs."
Maya’s eyes widened. "That’s impossible. That place burned down three years ago."
"Nothing about this is possible," Rachel snapped. "The genetics report—it flagged Sarah Thorne. Our Sarah."
Maya sank against the wall. "Sarah died three years ago. I was at her funeral. She was infertile, Rachel. Everyone knew."
"Then who is that baby?"
Rachel didn't wait for an answer. She accessed the hospital’s secure archives through a back-door terminal she had learned to use during her residency. She typed in the sequence for Sarah Thorne’s medical records. Everything was purged, but there was one hidden file—a digitized, encrypted log that had been accidentally left behind in the cloud sync.
She opened it. It wasn't a medical chart. It was a research journal dated two weeks after Sarah’s funeral.
