Chapter 8 - The Price of Survival

The night was a blur of rain, adrenaline, and the distant, haunting sirens of Aethelgard’s private security forces sweeping the wetlands. Rachel and Maya huddled beneath a concrete overpass, the infant—now named "Hope" by unspoken agreement—clutched against Rachel’s chest. Hope was frail, her temperature fluctuating, but her eyes were bright and alert, tracking the movement of the headlights that danced across the bridge above them.

"She needs more than just warmth," Maya whispered, her hands working deftly to set up a makeshift IV drip using supplies from her emergency bag. "Her metabolic rate is off the charts. If we don’t stabilize her cellular structure, she’s going to crash again."

Rachel watched the highway, her mind racing. They had escaped, but they were essentially ghosts. Every digital footprint they left was a beacon for Aris Thorne. "She’s not just a human, Maya. She’s a biological masterpiece. Aris isn't just trying to harvest her; she’s trying to replicate the 'immortality' factor in her blood. If we get this bloodwork to the public, the research will be confiscated. We need to find someone who can expose it before the authorities take her away."

"Julian Vane," Maya said, remembering their contact. "He’s at the old broadcast tower in the city. If we can get there, he can upload the data from the facility's encrypted drive I swiped during the collapse."

As they moved, they realized they weren't alone. Shadows moved in the periphery—not just security, but private mercenaries hired by the conglomerate to sweep the area. They were hunting not for survivors, but for witnesses.
