Chapter 9 - The Last Stand

The old broadcast tower loomed like a jagged needle against the stormy sky. They reached it just as the first grey light of dawn began to bleed into the horizon. Julian Vane was there, his face haggard, his hands shaking as he wired the drive into the legacy transmitter.
"If I push this to the global grid," Julian warned, "there’s no taking it back. Aris Thorne will lose everything, but she’ll burn the city to get it back."
"Do it," Rachel commanded.
Before the progress bar could hit 100%, the doors at the base of the tower exploded inward. Aris Thorne stepped through the smoke, her white coat stained with mud, her eyes burning with a manic, singular focus. She was backed by two remaining tactical units.
"Give me the child, Rachel," Aris said, her voice eerily calm. "You have no idea what you’re holding. She is the only hope for a world plagued by terminal illness. I am saving humanity."
"You’re trading individual souls for progress," Rachel stepped forward, positioning herself between Aris and the infant. "She’s a baby. She has a right to a life, not a laboratory."
The standoff was broken by a sudden, deafening roar. The tactical guards hesitated—Julian had successfully bypassed the firewalls, and news alerts were already flooding the city’s screens. The truth about the underground facility, the clones, and the systematic abuse of power was playing out in real-time.

Aris’s guards turned, their phones buzzing with messages from their superiors. The corporation was collapsing, its stock plummeting, its leadership under siege by federal warrants. Aris looked at her phone, then at the terminal, her face twisting in pure, unadulterated rage. She pulled a weapon, but before she could aim, the man from the tactical team—the one who had helped them escape—stepped out of the shadows and disarmed her with a single, practiced move.
"It’s over, Aris," he said.
