Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Machine

Rachel and Maya moved with silent urgency. They knew the hospital’s security team had been compromised; the man in the tactical gear had used an internal staff override code to enter the NICU.
"If they have the baby, they’re taking her to the secondary site," Rachel said, her voice steadying as her fear turned into cold, tactical rage. "The Aethelgard facility isn't gone. It’s moved."
"We can't go to the police," Maya whispered, checking the hallways. "They own the local precinct. We need someone from the outside."
Rachel pulled up a contact on her encrypted messaging app: Julian Vane, a former investigative journalist who had been disgraced for trying to expose Aethelgard years ago.
“I have the key,” she typed. “And I know where the ghost went.”
Within minutes, a reply appeared: “Do not move. They are tracking your digital footprint through the hospital’s internal network. Shut everything down.”
Rachel smashed her phone’s SIM card and removed the battery. The hospital felt like a tomb. Every shadow in the corridor looked like the man in the tactical coat. They navigated the labyrinthine basement, passing by the old, abandoned wing where the ventilation systems still groaned with the weight of decades of dust.
As they reached the sub-basement, Rachel spotted something that made her stop. A heavy steel door, freshly painted, with an electronic scanner. She held up the silver key.
The lotus symbol flickered with a faint, blue light as it neared the scanner.

"It’s not just a key," Maya breathed. "It’s a biometric bypass."
The door hissed open, revealing not a storage room, but a sterile, white-tiled elevator shaft that descended deep into the earth. This was the heart of the conspiracy. As they stepped into the elevator, the floor display showed levels that didn't exist on any blueprint of the city: B-4 through B-12.
