Chapter 6 - Whispers in the Dark

Logan didn’t flinch. He stepped between Richard and Vanessa, his towering frame instantly dominating the room.

“Uncle Richard,” Vanessa said, her voice dripping with venomous control. “Dr. Vance. What a pleasant surprise.”

Dr. Vance coughed nervously, shifting his briefcase. “Vanessa, as Chief Medical Officer, I must urge caution. Extracting an unverified object from Layla’s ear without consulting her primary medical team could lead to severe neurological trauma—”

“The object was extracted by Dr. Thorne,” Vanessa interrupted coldly. “And he identified it as a military-grade acoustic jammer manufactured in your private lab, Dr. Vance.”

Vance’s face lost all color. He looked frantically at Richard.

Richard’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second before hardening into iron. “Vanessa, you are clearly overwhelmed by fatigue and grand delusions. Accusing Whitmore BioTech of harming your daughter is legally reckless. I suggest you take a leave of absence.”

“I’m not going anywhere, Richard,” Vanessa declared. “And neither are you.”

That night, Logan relocated Vanessa and Layla to a secure, off-grid safehouse owned by his former Northstar colleagues in the coastal hills outside Bellhaven. Logan’s son, Ethan, joined them, and within hours, Layla and Ethan were sitting together, drawing fish and playing board games. For the first time in her life, Layla was hearing the laughter of another child.

Around midnight, while the children slept, Logan sat with Vanessa on the porch overlooking the dark ocean.

“I was terrified for so long,” Vanessa admitted quietly, holding her knees to her chest. “I thought I was failing her every single day.”

“You didn’t fail her, Vanessa,” Logan said softly. “You fought for her every second. You just needed someone to clear the noise so she could be heard.”

Vanessa looked at Logan, her eyes reflecting the starlight. The distance between the billionaire heiress and the broke security guard had vanished, replaced by an unshakeable bond forged in fire.

Suddenly, Logan’s tactical earpiece buzzed.

“Logan, we’ve got perimeter breaches,” his former rescue partner warned over the radio. “Three armed vehicles just cut off the main access road.”
