Chapter 5 - The War Room

Massimo hung up the receiver with eerie slowness.
Around him, his men were in a state of high alert. Marcus was already pulling up building schematics on a portable tactical screen, while Dario was barking orders to perimeter teams outside to locate the spotter sedan.
"He's got the block boxed in," Marcus reported, his voice tight. "If those tankers blow, the thermal blast will breach the lower three floors of this building. The structural collapse will take out the ICU instantly."
"Find the spotter," Rafael demanded, stepping toward Marcus. "You have twenty armed guys here! Send them into the streets! Search every car within three blocks!"
"It doesn't work like that, kid!" Marcus snapped back. "If the spotter sees our men moving out, he presses the button! We can't clear a three-block radius in twenty minutes without triggering the trap!"
Teo was already walking toward the nurses' station desk. Without asking permission, he pulled a sleek black laptop from his backpack, flipped it open, and plugged an ethernet cable directly into the hospital’s primary fiber-optic terminal under the desk.
"What is he doing?" Dario asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Teo's a computer science major at MIT," Rafael said, his voice holding a flash of fierce brotherly pride. "He cleared the regional cybersecurity challenge when he was sixteen. Give him three minutes."
Massimo walked over to the desk, standing behind Teo. The boy’s fingers were a blur across the mechanical keyboard, terminal lines of green code cascading down his dark screen like a waterfall.
"I'm tapping into the municipal traffic camera network," Teo muttered, his eyes reflected in the glowing screen. "Filtering for idling vehicles within a 500-meter radius of the hospital... cross-referencing with dark-web vehicle registrations..."
"Can you trace the frequency of the detonator?" Massimo asked softly.
Teo glanced up at Massimo, surprised by the question. "Yes. If they're using a long-range radio-frequency trigger, it has to ping a local cellular tower to bypass the building's jamming field. I'm building a localized directional sniffer now."
Four seconds passed. A high-resolution map of the surrounding city grid flashed onto Teo’s screen. A bright red dot began pulsing violently three blocks north, parked in an alley behind an abandoned bakery.
"Got him," Teo said, a cold, triumphant smile touching his lips. "Silver Audi A6. Plate number 7-Victor-Alpha-9. Radio frequency locked at 433 Megahertz."
Massimo looked at his son with a sudden, profound shift in his perception. These were not helpless boys who had come to beg for money. They were intelligent, lethal, and resilient—built from his blood and Renata’s spirit.
"Marcus," Massimo said, turning to his tactical chief. "Take two sniper units to the rooftop. Teo will feed the exact coordinates to your heads-up display. You have three minutes to line up a high-angle shot through the rear window of that Audi. Kill the driver before he can move his thumb."
"On it, Boss!" Marcus grabbed his rifle case and sprinted toward the service stairs.
Massimo then turned to Dario. "Prepare my private vehicle."
Rafael stepped into Massimo’s path, blocking him. "Where are you going?"
"I am going to the North Dock warehouse," Massimo said, pulling a custom-crafted black 9mm pistol from a hidden holster under his left arm and checking the magazine with a crisp, mechanical click. "Vincenzo asked for a meeting. It would be rude to keep an old friend waiting."
"He told you to come alone!" Teo yelled, closing his laptop. "It's an ambush!"
"Of course it's an ambush," Massimo said, looking between his two sons. He reached out, his heavy hand resting on Rafael’s shoulder. For the first time, Rafael didn't pull away. "Which is why you two are going to help me execute a counter-ambush."
Rafael’s eyes widened. "You're taking us?"
May you like
Massimo’s dark eyes flashed with a cold, terrifying pride.
"You brought yourselves into my world, boys," Massimo said quietly. "Now it's time you see how a Conti finishes a war."
