Chapter 6 - Rain and Iron

The North Dock district was a graveyard of rusted shipping containers, abandoned grain silos, and decaying wooden piers jutting out into the black, churning waters of the bay. The rain fell in relentless sheets, driven by a freezing gale off the Atlantic.

Warehouse 17 stood isolated at the edge of Pier 4. Its rusted corrugated iron walls groaned against the wind, warm yellow light spilling through broken high-altitude windows.

A single black armored sedan pulled up to the main double doors of the warehouse, its headlights cutting two bright beams through the dark storm.

Inside the warehouse, sixteen men dressed in heavy leather coats and tactical gear stood in a semi-circle around an elevated wooden office platform. Sitting in an antique leather armchair atop the platform, wrapped in a heavy mink coat with an oxygen tube running to his nose, was Don Vincenzo Moretti.

Beside Vincenzo stood his lieutenant, Giancarlo—a broad-shouldered man with a scar running across his throat, holding a silenced submachine gun.

The heavy front doors of the warehouse screeched open.

Massimo Conti walked inside.

He was alone. He wore his heavy black overcoat, unbuttoned at the chest, his hands held casually in his pockets. His leather shoes splashed through shallow puddles on the concrete floor as he walked into the center of the kill zone, stopping twenty feet from the platform.

"Massimo," Vincenzo rasped, leaning forward in his chair, a grotesque, yellowed grin spreading across his withered face. "Look at you. The great Don of the city, walking into my lair like a dog on a leash."

Massimo scanned the room with bored indifference. He counted sixteen shooters on the ground floor, two snipers perched on the iron catwalks thirty feet above, and Giancarlo on the platform.

"You look terrible, Vincenzo," Massimo said calmly, his voice echoing in the vast, cavernous warehouse. "The liver rot suits you. It matches your soul."

Vincenzo’s smile vanished, replaced by a dark, spitting rage. "Always the arrogant bastard! You think you rule this city? You think you're untouchable? Look around you! My men hold every exit! One word from me and they turn you into meat!"

"Where are the boys, Massimo?" Giancarlo sneered, stepping up beside Vincenzo. "Did you leave your bastard sons at the hospital to burn?"

Massimo looked at Giancarlo. "A radio-frequency trigger is a clever tool, Giancarlo. Unless, of course, the man holding the detonator gets a high-caliber sniper round through his eye socket before he can press it."

Vincenzo’s hand tightened on the arm of his chair. He fumbled for his cell phone, frantically pressing a speed-dial button.

Silence.

"Your spotter in the Audi is dead, Vincenzo," Massimo said, taking a slow step forward. "Saint Jude’s is secure. My men have already disarmed your propane tankers. You have no leverage. You have no cards left to play."

Vincenzo dropped the phone, his breathing turning shallow and frantic. "It doesn't matter!" he screamed, his voice breaking into a ragged cough. "Kill him! Kill him now!"

Sixteen weapons raised in unison, aimed directly at Massimo’s chest.

"Now, Teo!" Massimo shouted into his lapel mic.
