Chapter 7 - The Symphony of Lead

Above the warehouse, the heavy corrugated glass skylight exploded inward in a shower of sharp, sparkling shards.

Two tactical rappelling ropes dropped from the gloom of the roof. Sweeping down through the rain and glass came Dario and Emmett, firing silenced automatic rifles on full-auto before their boots even hit the concrete floor.

At the same time, the main electrical junction box at the back of the warehouse burst into bright blue electrical sparks. Teo, sitting in the command van two hundred yards away, had successfully executed a surge-override on the docks' power grid, plunging the entire warehouse into pitch-black darkness.

Panic erupted instantly.

"I can't see! Where are they?!"

Muzzle flashes strobed through the dark like violent lightning strikes. The deafening roar of gunfire shattered the night, brass casings raining down onto the concrete floor like heavy metal hail.

Massimo didn't draw a gun. He drew a custom nine-inch tactical blade from his belt.

In the total dark, guided by decades of combat instinct and the temporary flashes of gunfire, Massimo moved like a phantom. He stepped inside the guard closest to him, trapping the man’s rifle arm with his left hand while driving the blade upward beneath the ribs. Before the man could scream, Massimo spun him around, using his body as a human shield against a burst of wild automatic fire from the right.

"Flank them!" Giancarlo’s voice screamed from the platform. "Get the lights on!"

On the catwalk thirty feet above, a sniper raised his rifle, sighting down at Dario’s muzzle flash.

A shadow rose behind the sniper.

Rafael Conti, who had climbed the exterior fire escape ladder in the pouring rain, lunged forward. He slammed a heavy iron wrench across the sniper’s temple, throwing the man over the catwalk railing. The body crashed onto the concrete floor thirty feet below with a sickening crunch.

Rafael grabbed the sniper’s dropped night-vision goggles, pulled them over his eyes, and picked up the suppressed rifle.

From his high vantage point on the catwalk, Rafael swept the barrel across the darkness below. He saw three Moretti gunmen maneuvering around a stack of wooden crates, aiming at the back of Massimo’s head as his father fought off two men at close range.

Rafael didn't hesitate. He pulled the trigger three times in rapid succession.

Pfft. Pfft. Pfft.

The three gunmen dropped instantly, shot through the back of their tactical helmets.

Down on the floor, Massimo felt the wind of the bullets passing over his head, heard the wet thuds of the bodies falling behind him. He looked up at the catwalk, seeing the silhouette of his eldest son standing against the shattered skylight.

Massimo smiled a dark, bloody smile.

The emergency backup generator kicked in with a loud mechanical whine. The high-bay sodium lights flickered back on, casting a harsh, yellow light over the bloody scene.

Twelve of Moretti’s men lay dead or dying on the floor. Dario and Emmett held the remaining four at gunpoint, forcing them to their knees.

On the elevated platform, Vincenzo Moretti sat frozen in his chair, his oxygen mask hanging loose around his neck, his face white with terror. Beside him, Giancarlo grabbed Vincenzo, using the frail old man as a human shield as he pressed a pistol against Vincenzo’s temple while aiming his submachine gun at Massimo.

"Stay back!" Giancarlo screamed, his eyes wild with desperate madness. "Stay back or I kill him!"

Massimo walked slowly toward the platform, his heavy shoes stepping over the bodies of his enemies. He didn't look at Giancarlo’s gun. He looked into Giancarlo’s eyes.

"You're using your own Don as a shield, Giancarlo?" Massimo asked softly. "How pathetic."

"I don't care about him!" Giancarlo yelled. "I want a chopper! I want safe passage out of the state! If I don't get it in five minutes, I shoot!"

"You won't make it five seconds," a quiet voice spoke from the shadows behind the platform.

Giancarlo’s head whipped around.

Teo stepped out from behind a stack of steel drums. In his hands, he held a heavy twelve-gauge tactical shotgun he had taken from the command van. His arms were shaking slightly, but his eyes were locked on Giancarlo with an absolute, uncompromising stillness.

"Put the gun down," Teo said, his voice quiet, clear, and steady.

Giancarlo laughed hysterically. "Look at you! A college kid playing mobster! You don't have the guts to pull that trigger, boy!"

Giancarlo began to turn his gun away from Massimo toward Teo.

BOOM!

The heavy blast of the shotgun echoed through the warehouse like a cannon shot.

Giancarlo was thrown backward off the platform by the sheer force of the blast, crashing into a stack of empty pallets, dead before he hit the ground.

Silence fell over Warehouse 17.

Teo stood holding the smoking shotgun, his chest heaving, his face pale. He looked at his hands, then at the fallen lieutenant.

Massimo walked up the steps of the platform. He passed Vincenzo, who was weeping silently in his chair, and stepped down toward Teo.

Massimo reached out, taking the heavy shotgun gently from Teo’s shaking hands and handing it to Dario. Then, Massimo wrapped his arms around Teo, pulling his younger son into a tight, fierce embrace.

"You did good, son," Massimo whispered against Teo’s dark hair. "You saved us all."

May you like

Rafael swung down from the rappelling rope, landing lightly beside them. He looked at his brother, then at Massimo.

For the first time in nineteen years, the three Conti men stood together in the light.
