Chapter 3 - The Bloodline Ledger

The rain began to batter the high arched windows of the Varric estate by midnight, turning the gardens outside into a sea of churning mud and roaring wind.

Inside the master study on the third floor, a massive fire crackled in the stone hearth, casting dancing orange shadows across leather-bound books, polished steel weapons, and two dark leather armchairs.

Nico was asleep in a portable bassinet beside the desk, wrapped in a fresh, warm cotton blanket. For the first time in nearly a month, his face was smooth, his breathing deep and undisturbed.

Liana sat in the armchair beside the bassinet, a warm cup of tea sitting untouched on the table beside her. She had refused to change out of her red maid dress, as if wearing it kept her grounded in the reality of what was happening.

Across from her sat Matteo. He had removed his suit jacket, rolling his white shirt sleeves up to his elbows, revealing dark ink tattoos outlining the ancient coat of arms of the Varric family along his forearms.

"Drink your tea," Matteo said softly.

"I don't want tea, Mr. Varric," Liana said, her voice shaking with a dangerous mixture of grief and maternal fury. "I want to know how a billionaire mob boss lets his father-in-law steal a baby from a public hospital ward without noticing!"

Matteo didn't flare up at her insolence. Instead, he leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, staring into the fire.

"Nine months ago, my empire was at war," Matteo said, his tone heavy with a dark, bitter weight. "The Moretti cartel was pushing into our shipping lines at the docks. My wife, Helena, was sick—her heart was failing throughout the pregnancy. I wasn't allowed in the delivery room because Don Valenti’s private security detail insisted the hospital wing was compromised by Moretti hitmen."

He looked at Liana, his grey eyes filled with a hollow, agonizing truth.

"They brought me the baby twenty minutes after the delivery," Matteo continued. "Helena was unconscious in the ICU. I held Nico in my arms in that hallway, looking at his dark eyes, and I swore to God I would tear the city apart to keep him safe. I didn't know he wasn't Helena’s. I didn't know my father-in-law had murdered your life to give me an heir."

Liana covered her mouth with her hand, a dry sob tearing from her throat. "He was my son... my little boy. I sat in an empty apartment for three weeks, staring at an empty crib, holding a box of ashes that didn't even belong to me!"

"And now you are here," Matteo said quietly.

"I’m taking him back," Liana declared, standing up instantly, her body positioning itself protectively between Matteo and the bassinet. "I don't care about your syndicate. I don't care about your wars or your money. He is my biological son, and I am leaving this house with him."

Matteo stood up slowly. He didn't draw a weapon. He didn't call the guards standing outside the door. He simply walked to the window, looking out into the torrential storm.

"If you walk out of those gates tonight with Nico," Matteo said, his voice terrifyingly calm, "Don Valenti’s men will kill you before you reach the end of the driveway."

Liana froze. "What?"

"Valenti knows Nurse Sarah broke into the nursery three weeks ago," Matteo explained, turning back to face her. "He knows the truth is out there. The moment he realizes you have identified Nico as your stolen child, he will wipe you off the face of the earth to protect the Valenti family’s standing in the Commission."

"I’ll go to the police!" Liana cried out. "I’ll go to the FBI!"

Matteo let out a cold, breathless laugh. "Half the police captains in this city are on Valenti’s payroll, Liana. The other half are on mine. The law cannot save you here. The only thing standing between your son and a bullet is me."

Liana stared at him, her chest heaving as the brutal reality of her situation settled into her bones. She was a woman with no money, no power, and no weapons, trapped in a palace of stone and iron, surrounded by men who killed for a living.

Yet as she looked at Matteo, she didn't see a monster. She saw a man whose world had been built on a foundation of lies—a father who had spent nine months loving a child he believed was his own.

"Why didn't you throw me out?" Liana asked whispered softly. "The moment you heard that recording... you could have killed me. You could have buried the truth and kept Nico for yourself."

Matteo walked over to the bassinet. He reached down with one large, calloused finger, gently touching Nico’s small, soft hand. The baby’s fingers curled around his father’s knuckle instinctively, even in his sleep.

"Because for nine months, I prayed for my son to stop crying," Matteo said, his voice cracking with unfiltered emotion. "And tonight, he stopped the second you touched him. His soul knows you, Liana. And I will not break his heart by taking his mother away a second time."

Before Liana could respond, the heavy oak doors of the study blew open with a violent crash!

Marcus, Matteo’s chief security enforcer, burst into the room, his tactical vest splattered with rain and fresh blood.

"Boss!" Marcus yelled, pulling a high-caliber sidearm from his chest holster. "The south gate is down! Valenti’s strike team just blew the power grid! They’re inside the house!"
