Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Cradle

Six months later. Spring 2026.

The gardens of the Varric estate in Lake Forest were bathed in the brilliant, golden light of May. The scorched earth from the winter assault was gone, replaced by blooming red roses, white hydrangeas, and lush green lawns stretching down toward the blue waters of Lake Michigan.

The mansion had been completely rebuilt—brighter, warmer, and entirely free of hidden cameras, dark secrets, or fear.

On the grand wrap-around veranda overlooking the lake, a long wooden table was set with fresh pastries, silver coffee pots, fresh fruit, and bowls of berries.

Nico, now fifteen months old, was toddling across the soft grass of the lawn on his sturdy little legs. He wore a tiny blue linen shirt and white shorts, his dark curls bouncing as he chased a golden retriever puppy through the dandelion flowers.

His laughter—rich, bright, and endlessly joyful—echoed across the sunny gardens.

Liana stood near the edge of the porch, wearing an elegant white lace summer dress, watching her son play. The dark shadows beneath her eyes were entirely gone, replaced by a radiant beauty and peace that illuminated her face.

A pair of strong arms wrapped securely around her waist from behind.

Matteo leaned down, resting his chin comfortably on her shoulder, his hands resting over hers against her stomach. He wore a simple white linen shirt, his sleeves rolled up, looking relaxed, powerful, and deeply content.

"He’s getting fast," Matteo murmured, kissing the soft spot beneath her ear. "Marcus said he tried to climb the library stairs this morning."

Liana laughed softly, leaning her head back against Matteo’s chest. "He takes after his father. He doesn't know how to stay still."

Down on the grass, Nico caught the puppy, cradling it in his lap as he sat down in the clover. He looked up toward the veranda, saw his mother and father standing together in the sunshine, and let out a happy cheer, waving his tiny hand frantically.

"Mama! Dada! Look!" Nico called out in his bright, clear voice.

Matteo smiled—a genuine, warm smile that transformed his ruthless face into that of a devoted, loving father.

He stepped down off the porch, taking Liana’s hand in his, and together they walked down the stone steps into the warm sunlight toward their son.

Matteo pulled a small velvet box from his pocket, opening it to reveal a simple, breathtaking ring—an antique diamond band engraved with the Varric coat of arms intertwined with an olive branch.

He stopped on the grass, turning to look into Liana’s ocean-blue eyes.

"You brought life back into this house, Liana," Matteo said, his voice deep with unfiltered love and reverence. "You saved my son. You saved me. Will you stay by my side... as my wife, my queen, and the undisputed mother of this empire?"

Liana looked at the ring, then up at the man who had fought through fire and blood to protect her and her child.

She didn't hesitate. She slid her fingers into his, leaning up on her tiptoes to press a warm, passionate kiss against his lips.

"Always, Matteo," Liana whispered against his cheek. "Always."

Nico toddled over, throwing his tiny arms around both of their legs, giggling happily as Matteo reached down, lifting his son and his wife into a tight, unbreakable embrace beneath the warm spring sun.

The nightmare was over. The lie was destroyed. And in its place stood a family—united by blood, crowned by truth, and bound forever by an unyielding, sovereign love.
