Chapter 4 - Fire in the West Wing

The lights in the mansion died instantly.

The grand chandeliers in the foyer went dark, plunging the vast stone estate into a pitch-black nightmare illuminated only by the sharp, flashing blue light of emergency backup beacons.

BANG-BANG-BANG-BANG!

Suppressed automatic gunfire echoed from the floor below, followed by the heavy thud of bodies hitting marble.

Liana gasped, throwing herself over the bassinet, her arms wrapping around Nico as the baby woke up, letting out a startled cry.

"Stay down!" Matteo roared.

In a fraction of a second, Matteo moved with lethal, practiced precision. He reached beneath his heavy mahogany desk, pulling a hidden lever. A concealed steel armor plate slid open in the wall beside the fireplace, revealing a fully stocked tactical armory.

Matteo grabbed a black suppressed submachine gun, racking the slide with a sharp, terrifying CLACK-CLACK. He slapped two spare magazines into his belt holsters and turned toward Marcus.

"How many?" Matteo demanded, his voice colder than the storm outside.

"At least twelve," Marcus reported, checking his own weapon. "They used military-grade thermite charges on the front doors. They’re moving straight for the nursery and the study! Valenti wants the boy cleared before the perimeter guards can regroup!"

"They aren't getting anywhere near my son," Matteo growled.

He turned to Liana, grabbing her by the hand and hauling her out of the chair. "Hold Nico. Tight."

Liana scooped the baby into her arms, pressing his face into the crook of her neck to muffle his cries. She could feel his tiny heart hammering like a trapped bird against her ribs.

"Where are we going?" Liana whispered in terror.

"The escape tunnel behind the wine cellar," Matteo instructed, pushing her behind his broad frame as he stepped toward the study door. "Marcus, take the left corridor and draw their fire toward the ballroom. I will take Liana through the service stairs."

"Boss, it’s too risky—"

"Do it!" Matteo ordered.

Marcus nodded once, kicked open the study door, and burst into the hallway, firing three rapid bursts down the grand staircase!

RAT-TAT-TAT!

Screams and return fire erupted from the floor below.

Matteo seized Liana’s waist, pulling her through a narrow, hidden panel built into the study’s bookshelf. The panel snapped shut behind them just as a heavy grenade exploded in the hallway outside!

BOOM!

The shockwave rattled the stone walls, sending plaster dust raining down onto Liana’s hair.

Nico let out a piercing shriek of fear, but Liana held him fiercely, pressing her back against the dark wooden wall of the secret passage. "Shh... baby, shh... Mommy’s here, I’m right here..."

In the pitch darkness of the narrow staircase, Matteo paused. He turned his head, his grey eyes catching the faint emergency light filtering through the wall slats.

Mommy’s here.

The words hung in the narrow space between them, weighted with absolute truth.

"Hold onto my belt," Matteo instructed softly, his hand finding hers in the dark and squeezing it once—a gesture of pure, unadulterated protection. "We go fast. Do not stop for anything."

They descended the narrow, winding stone stairs, the sound of gunfire and shattering glass echoing through the floorboards above them.

As they reached the basement level near the wine cellar, the heavy steel fire door at the end of the corridor was suddenly kicked open with a deafening metallic screech!

A tall mercenary dressed in black tactical gear and a night-vision visor stepped into the hall, his rifle raised directly at Liana’s chest!

"Found the maid!" the mercenary shouted into his radio comms. "She’s got the kid—"

BANG!

Before the man could pull his trigger, Matteo stepped in front of Liana, raising his weapon with one hand and putting a single bullet directly through the mercenary’s visor.

The man collapsed like a sack of bricks.

Matteo didn't hesitate. He grabbed the mercenary’s tactical radio, smashed it under his heavy boot, and pulled Liana past the fallen body into the damp, stone-arched wine cellar.

"In here!" Matteo grunted, kicking open a rusted iron grate set into the floor.

A dark, narrow ladder led down into an underground drainage tunnel beneath the estate grounds.

"Climb down," Matteo told Liana, pointing his flash-lit weapon toward the cellar entrance. "I’ll cover the ladder."

May you like

"Matteo, no!" Liana cried out, using his first name for the first time. "There are too many of them! You can't fight them alone!"

"I’m not fighting them alone," Matteo said, meeting her eyes with a fierce, dark pride. "I’m buying time for my family to escape. Now get down that ladder, Liana!"
