Chapter 6 - The DNA of a Dynasty

The sun rose over the Wisconsin pines in a brilliant burst of gold and violet, burning away the lingering mountain mist.
The safehouse was a secluded timber log cabin built into the side of a steep granite cliff, surrounded by dense forest and protected by hidden motion sensors and four elite snipers stationed in the treeline.
Inside the great room, a roaring fire warmed the heavy log walls.
Nico sat on a thick sheepskin rug in front of the hearth, happily playing with a set of wooden stacking rings that Evelyn had pulled from a storage crate. His laughter—bright, clear, and innocent—filled the room like music.
In the small kitchen area, Dr. Marcus Vance—the same military surgeon who managed Matteo’s private medical needs—set down a silver briefcase on the counter.
He had arrived by chopper forty minutes earlier under absolute secrecy.
"I ran the high-speed genetic amplification sequencing," Dr. Vance announced, pulling two sheets of heavy paper from his leather folder.
Matteo stood at the counter, leaning against the marble edge, while Liana stood beside him, clutching a mug of black coffee, her heart hammering against her ribs.
"Tell us, Marcus," Matteo said.
Dr. Vance looked at Liana first, his eyes filled with a deep, professional respect. "The maternal match between Liana Graves and the child known as Nico Varric is ninety-nine point nine-nine percent. There is no biological doubt. You are his mother, Liana."
Liana let out a shuddering breath, her hand covering her mouth as fresh tears of relief spilled over her cheeks. Hearing it officially confirmed by a medical document felt like breaking through a surface of cold water after drowning for nine long months.
"And the paternal match?" Matteo asked, his voice low, guarded, and hollow.
Dr. Vance turned the second page over.
"The late Helena Varric was not the biological mother," Vance revealed. "However... the paternal sample pulled from Nico matches the Varric family bloodline."
Matteo froze. "What did you say?"
Vance pointed to the genetic marker chart on the page. "Nico is not Helena’s son. But he is your biological child, Matteo."
Liana gasped, looking from the document up to Matteo’s stunned face. "How... how is that possible?"
Dr. Vance took a deep breath. "Nine months ago, when Helena was undergoing fertility treatments at St. Jude’s private clinic, Don Valenti insisted on using an offshore surrogacy protocol without your direct knowledge. They harvested Matteo’s genetic material and implanted it into a donor candidate through a blind medical clinical trial."
Vance looked directly at Liana.
"Liana... you were listed in the St. Jude’s registry as a paid clinical research candidate nine months ago when you sought assistance for your medical debt," Vance explained softly. "You weren't just a random woman in the public ward. Don Valenti specifically selected your medical profile because your blood type matched Helena’s, making any superficial resemblance easy to pass off to the family."
The room seemed to spin around Liana.
She remembered it now. Nine months ago, desperate to pay off her late mother’s hospital bills, she had answered a newspaper ad for a paid clinical research program at St. Jude’s. They had told her it was a routine vitamin study. They had lied to her. They had used her body as an secret surrogate for the Varric empire!
"They didn't just steal my baby," Liana whispered, horror dawning in her eyes. "They engineered him in a lab... used me to carry him... and then tried to throw me away when he was born!"
Matteo turned slowly to face her.
His grey eyes were burning with an intensity so profound it made Liana’s breath catch. The distance between them vanished as Matteo stepped forward, taking both of her cold hands in his large, warm grip.
"Nico isn't a mistake," Matteo whispered, his voice trembling with a raw, fierce reverence. "He isn't a fake heir. He is our son, Liana. Yours and mine."
Liana looked at the dark-haired, grey-eyed man standing before her—the father of her child, the man whose blood ran through Nico’s veins, the mob boss who had risked his life six hours ago to carry her through a hail of bullets.
Down on the rug, Nico let out a happy squeal, tossing a wooden ring toward them.
May you like
Matteo dropped to his knees on the sheepskin rug, picking up the ring. He looked up at Liana, extending his hand toward her.
"Come sit with us, Liana," Matteo said softly. "It’s time we stop running... and start taking back our family."
