Chapter 3 - The Descent of the Predator

"Emma, hide!" Ethan whispered frantically through the glass, his small face twisted in terror. "She’s coming back down! She checks on me every night before the party starts!"
Panic surged through Emma, but her survival instincts kicked in with razor-sharp clarity. There was no time to climb the stairs and escape without being seen; the footsteps were already halfway down the concrete flight.
Scanning the narrow corridor with her flashlight, she spotted a gap between a large ventilation unit and the stone wall—just wide enough for her compact frame to squeeze into, hidden behind a heavy canvas tarp draped over spare construction supplies.
Without a sound, Emma slipped behind the tarp, pulling it tightly around her shoulders and holding her breath. Through a small tear in the coarse fabric, she kept her eyes fixed on the steel door.
The footsteps reached the bottom of the corridor.
A shadow fell across the concrete floor.
Isabella Sterling stepped into view. She was no longer wearing the flowing ivory gown from the ballroom; instead, she wore a sleek, blood-red silk jumpsuit that clung to her tall, slender frame like liquid fire. Her blonde hair was tied back in a severe, immaculate bun, and her face—usually locked in a polite, society-wife smile—was twisted into an expression of cold, clinical cruelty.
In her right hand, she carried a silver tray holding a plastic cup of murky water and a stale roll of bread.
Isabella walked up to the steel door with the casual grace of a predator visiting a trapped animal. She didn't look rushed or panicked. She looked entirely at home in the dark.
"Well, Ethan," Isabella sang out, her voice smooth, sweet, and dripping with malicious venom. "Did you enjoy your little crying session? Did you think someone was coming to save you?"
Through the small glass hatch, Ethan retreated into the far corner of the cell, pulling his knees to his chest. "Leave me alone. My dad is going to find out. He’ll call the police."
Isabella let out a light, musical laugh that echoed chillingly against the stone walls.
"Your father?" She stepped closer to the door, tapping a long, manicured red nail against the steel frame. "Your father is upstairs right now, drinking champagne, smiling for the cameras, and telling everyone how wonderful his new life is. He doesn't care about you, Ethan. He cares about his portfolio, his real estate developments, and the prestige of having a beautiful, compliant wife by his side. You are just an inconvenient reminder of his first wife."
"He does care!" Ethan shouted, his voice cracking with desperate tears. "He loves me!"
"He loved her," Isabella corrected, her voice dropping into a dangerous, icy whisper. "And as long as you are breathing under this roof, you look just like her. But don't worry, sweet boy. Once the transfer of the Sterling Trust is legally signed over to me next week, I might just find a nice, quiet farm upstate where you can live out your days. Far away from New York."
Isabella punched a sequence of numbers into the keypad. The electronic box beeped softly, and she slid the metal privacy hatch shut with a sharp clack, plunging Ethan’s cell into complete darkness.
She turned around, her eyes sweeping slowly down the dim corridor.

Emma’s heart hammered so hard she was certain the sound would echo through the stone walls. Isabella stopped just five feet away from the canvas tarp, her gaze lingering on the floor where Emma’s flashlight had accidentally rolled an inch out of alignment.
Isabella took one slow, deliberate step toward the tarp.
