Chapter 4 - The Confrontation in the Dark

The tip of Isabella’s stiletto heel tapped against the concrete floor, stopping inches from the hem of the canvas tarp hiding Emma in the shadows.

Emma stopped breathing. Every muscle in her body locked rigid, her fingers clenched so tightly around her utility belt that her knuckles turned white.

Isabella stood completely still, her head tilting slightly to the side as if listening to the faint, distant hum of the ballroom music vibrating through the earth above. For three agonizing seconds, the silence in the basement was absolute.

Then, a soft chime chimed from the pocket of Isabella’s red silk jumpsuit.

Isabella pulled out her sleek, diamond-encrusted smartphone. She glanced at the screen, a thin smile touching her lips as she read the notification.

"Darling, where did you slip off to? The investors want a toast."

It was a text message from William Sterling.

Isabella scoffed softly to herself, tapping out a quick reply with her thumb. "Just freshening up, my love. I’ll be up in a moment."

She slipped the phone back into her pocket, cast one final, lingering look down the empty corridor, and turned on her heel. Her footsteps clicked sharply against the concrete stairs as she ascended toward the ballroom, the heavy baroque frame sliding shut with a muffled thud far above.

Emma exhaled a long, shuddering breath, her knees trembling as she stepped out from behind the tarp.

She didn't waste a second. Rushing to the steel door, she whispered against the metal hatch, "Ethan! Ethan, it's me. She's gone."

A small, muffled gasp came from inside the cell, followed by the shuffling of feet. The sliding privacy hatch opened a crack, revealing Ethan’s wide, tear-stained eyes in the beam of her flashlight.

"Emma? Is she really gone?"

"She's gone," Emma whispered fiercely, gripping the keypad. "Now, listen to me very carefully. Do you know the code she punched into this box?"

Ethan shook his head rapidly. "No. She always covers it with her hand so I can't see."

Emma cursed under her breath. The electronic lock was reinforced steel, connected directly to the mansion's smart-security grid. Without the master code or an override token, it couldn't be forced open from the outside without heavy industrial tools.

"I can't open it from here," Emma said, her voice heavy with frustration and urgency. "If I go upstairs for help, I run the risk of running into her or William. But I have to find a way to get you out of here tonight."

"Don't leave me, Emma," Ethan whimpered, his small fingers gripping the edge of the metal hatch. "Please don't leave me alone again."

"I'm not leaving you," Emma promised, her voice hardening with iron resolve. "I’m going up to find William. He has no idea what his wife is doing. When he sees this, everything is going to change."

"No, Emma, wait!" Ethan cried out in sudden panic. "You don't understand! Dad gave her the master authority over all the security systems on the wedding day! She told him it was a wedding gift so she could manage the estate staff! If you go to him, she’ll twist it! She’ll make him believe you're the crazy one!"

Emma froze, the weight of Ethan’s words settling over her like lead.

An undocumented housekeeper accusing the billionaire’s glamorous, untouchable new wife of kidnapping and locking his son in a basement dungeon? Without undeniable proof, William—blinded by his new marriage and wrapped around Isabella’s finger—would likely have security throw her out onto the street before she could finish the sentence.

"We need proof," Emma murmured, her mind racing. "Physical proof that William cannot ignore."

"Look at her desk," Ethan whispered urgently, pointing his small hand toward the darkness of the cell. "In the corner. She leaves her leather planner down here when she checks on me. She writes everything in it—passwords, bank accounts, and... and notes about how she's going to get rid of Dad."

Emma’s eyes widened. "A planner?"

"Yes! It’s sitting on the small folding table she uses when she sits down here to eat."

Emma shone her flashlight through the open hatch, sweeping the beam across the small cell. Sure enough, resting on a metal folding table in the back corner of the room was a thick, black leather-bound journal with a gold-embossed lock.

"Hold on, Ethan," Emma said.

She looked around the corridor, spotting a heavy iron crowbar leaning against the wall near the ventilation unit—left behind by maintenance workers. She grabbed it, jammed the flat end into the reinforced seam of the door frame beside the electronic lock, and threw her entire body weight against the metal lever.
