Chapter 7 - Unmasked

The light footsteps stopped abruptly halfway down the stairwell.
Isabella stood on the concrete landing, her red silk jumpsuit catching the dim light of the corridor. Her easy, mocking smile vanished the instant she saw William kneeling on the floor with Ethan clinging to his jacket—and Emma standing beside them like an unmovable pillar of judgment.
For a single heartbeat, absolute silence filled the basement.
Then, Isabella’s expression shifted with terrifying speed. The mask of a frightened, confused stepmother melted away, replaced by an expression of cold, venomous calculation.
"William," Isabella breathed, her voice trembling with expertly feigned shock and betrayal as she placed a hand over her heart. "Thank goodness you found him. I... I didn't know he was down here. I came down to check the storage lockers and I heard noises—I was just on my way up to tell you—"
"Shut up, Isabella," William said.
His voice wasn't loud. It wasn't angry. It was dead, cold, and heavy as a slab of granite.
Isabella stopped mid-sentence, her red lips parting slightly. "William? What are you saying? You can't possibly believe that this—this housekeeper—"
"She didn't say a word yet," William interrupted slowly, standing up to his full height. He looked down at his wife with eyes that suddenly seemed to see through every lie, every photograph, and every smile she had offered him over the past two months. "How did you know he was down here if you were just coming to check storage lockers? You told me five days ago that he was safely with my sister in Maine."
Isabella’s composure faltered for a fraction of a second. Her eyes darted toward the shattered steel door of the concrete cell, then back to William.
"William, you're not thinking clearly," she said, her voice dropping into a honeyed, manipulative purr as she took a slow step down the stairs, reaching out a manicured hand. "The stress of the wedding... the media... you've been working too hard. Let me take Ethan upstairs. We can clear this up quietly—"
"Don't touch him!" William snapped, stepping protectively in front of his son.
Emma stepped forward, pulling the black leather journal out from her apron pocket and holding it up for the billionaire to see.
"You might want to read this first, Mr. Sterling," Emma said coldly. "Your wife didn't just lock your son in a basement. She's been documenting every single step of her plan to take over your estate, isolate your family, and sedate you with heavy barbiturates every night to keep you compliant."
Isabella’s face drained of all color. The mask shattered completely.
"Give me that," Isabella hissed, lunging down the stairs toward Emma with claws bared like a cornered animal.
She never made it.
From the top of the stairwell, heavy footsteps and the sharp clack of tactical boots echoed downward.
"Federal agents! Nobody move!"

Three private security officers—dispatched by Dante Cruz, William’s longtime head of corporate security whom Emma had secretly texted using her spare phone while breaking the lock—poured down the stairs, weapons drawn and professional authority radiating from every movement.
Isabella froze halfway down the steps, her arms outstretched, surrounded on all sides.
